Following the resounding victory for China over Venezuela in the girls' final, it was pleasing to see a far more competitive affair this time around, with the South Americans hitting back after the Asian side took an early lead.

Goals from Franklin Gil and Fernando Pacheco either side of halftime were enough for a 2-1 victory and the first Peruvian gold medal of the Games, while Iceland ensured a first medal of any colour with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Cape Verde in the bronze medal match.

Earlier on in the day, it was a frenetic afternoon of combat sport action with five titles won in freestyle wrestling and nine in boxing on a day of exclusively male action in the two sports. 

After managing six silver medals but only two gold over the first 10 days, Azerbaijan took three more titles, courtesy of wrestlers Teymur Mammadov and Igbal Hajizada in the respective under-63 and under-100 kilogram divisions, and light flywieght boxer Rufat Huseynov.

Japan, Kazakhstan and Russia also enjoyed victories on the mat while the United States, Kazakhstan, Italy, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Bulgaria all won in the ring.

There was also double gold for Cuba, with Javier Ibanez Diaz winning in the bantamweight division before Yordan Alain Hernandez Morejon claimed heavyweight honours.

Camille Prigent and Lucas Roisin each garnered gold medals for France in the girl's K1 and boy's C1 obstacle finals in canoe slalom, while Russia dominated the rhythmic gymnastics competition, with a team gold following individual success for Irina Annenkova.

There was more Russian success in beach volleyball, where Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Iarzutkin continued their domination with an emphatic 21-12, 21-13 final victory over Venezuela, while Australia won another thrilling hockey5s final, with a 3-2 shootout triumph over Canada.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the final day was that China managed not a single gold medal, as their diving dominance ended when the Norwegian and Mexican duo of Daniel Jensen and Alejandra Orozco Loza won the mixed international team event.

China did, however, win more medals than anyone else, with a total of 65 of which 39 were golden, when mixed results are excluded.

Russia were second with 56 medals of which 27 were gold, while the US managed 10 victories in a 22 medal haul.

France, Japan, Ukraine, Italy, Hungary and Brazil occupied the next six places, while Azerbaijan's late charge was enough for them to overhaul Great Britain and South Korea for the final slot in the top 10.
