The 16-year-old from Brighton, who is coached by Jon Bigg, the husband of 1992 Olympic 400 metres hurdle champion Sally Gunnell, was one of the favourites heading into the race after he was the fourth quickest from the two heats on Wednesday and managed to secure a medal after finishing in a time of 2min 21.85sec.

Mohammed Geleto of Ethiopia comfortably claimed gold in a superb of 2:19.54 while Hamza Driouch of Qatar finished second in 2:21.25 to pick up silver just ahead of Grice.  

Grice, who took up the sport at the age of 11 after winning his school cross country, admitted he was delighted to pick up a medal at the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games as he outsprinted Chuchu Jorjo from Eritrea.

He said: "I’m overjoyed to have won a medal for Great Britain here and it is a special feeling.

"It was a tough race today but overall I have had a great time in Singapore and it is fantastic to be going home with a medal."

The medal is the ninth medal to be won by a British athlete in Singapore who have now collected four golds, a silver and four bronzes following Grice’s third place today.
