The 17-year-old from Nottingham was first to go but held his nerve to post a score of 14.375 points before facing an anxious wait, but none of the seven subsequent competitors were able to surpass his mark.

The gold medal brings Oldham’s personal tally at the Youth Olympic Games to two, alongside the silver medal he won in last night’s pommel horse event.

"I'm really happy because that sort of made up for everything that has gone on this week," said Oldham, who was formerly a member of the centre of excellence at Notts County before deciding to concentrate on gymnastics.

"It's been a difficult week and when I came here I just wanted to get a gold medal and I've done it now, which is great."

Oldham had seen his chances of a medal in Wednesday's (August 18) individual all-around final ruined by a critical mistake on the same apparatus.

Another error earlier in the evening, when he stumbled upon landing, meant he missed out on a medal in the parallel bars by 0.100 points, finishing fourth.

Ukrainian Oleg Stepko won gold.

It brings Britain's total of gold medal at these Games to five.

Jade Jones won Britain's first gold in taekwondo and then the women’s junior rowing pair of Georgia Howard-Merrill and Fiona Gammond picked up gold.

Subsequently, Carian Scudamore won a gold medal in equestrian as part of a combined European team and tennis player Oliver Golding joined up with Czech Republic partner Jiri Vesely to strike gold in the men's doubles.
