21:57 Right, the girl's football is just finishing but we know the result - China are leading Namibia 10-0 in Group B. So we are going to wrap things up for this evening here on the insidethegames live blog. 

21:55 This isn't the clearest picture ever taken, but away from the sport three-time Olympic slalom champion and IOC member, Tony Estanguet, French Chef de Mission here in Nanjing, was hosting a reception for the French Olympic Committee.

He said lots of positive things about the Games, and about the French team, and the benefits of the Summer Youth Olympic Games. And he was most probably still on a high from that rugby sevens victory earlier on.

Along with many athletes and officials from the French team present, there was also IOC Honorary President Jacques Rogge and various other IOC members and International Federation President's. And last but certainly not least, French rugby legend, Serge Betsen.

21:52 A performance to catch the eye on the opening day of athletics action undoubtedly came from Jaheel Hyde of Jamaica. The 2013 world youth champion over 110m hurdles clocked a PB of 13.16 to win heat one.

That time is 0.16 seconds quicker than compatriot Andrew Riley ran when winning the Commonwealth Games gold medal earlier this summer and 0.03 seconds quicker than Sergey Shubenkov of Russia clocked when winning the European title last week.

And the scary thing is, it may not even be Hyde's best event. He also won the 400m hurdles at the World Junior Championships in Oregon this year. 

21:45 The sport is beginning to wind down here now with just a couple of results left to bring. 

Qatar's handball team have ended the day of a high after beating Tunisia 26-23 in the final match of the evening. 

Today was the first day of the handball competition and has seen wins for Russia, Sweden and Egypt.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal21:30 The final gold of the night has been won over at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium and it's Russia's Seda Tutkhalyan who takes it.

The 15-year-old finishes with a reasonable 12.450 on the floor but it is enough for her to hang on to first with a final score of 54.900.

Brazil's Flavia Lopes Saraiva finishes with strong performances on the balance beam and floor to overhaul Great Britain's Elissa Downie in second.

The Brazilians final score of 54.700 is just 0.2 behind the Russian and 0.550 ahead of Downie in third.

21:17 Talking of the 3x3 basketball, the action down at Wutaishan was absolutely enthralling.

The United States women looked particularly impressive when they recorded a 21-5 victory over Thailand, but there's no ruling out China (ever!) especially in front of a lively home crowd, and they looked on top form when they defeated Venezuela 21-9.

China's men competed in one of the most entrancing matches of the night where they squeezed a 19-18 win out of France. Spain will no doubt be a team for them to watch but they were taken right to the buzzer by Brazil in a game that saw a 12-11 scoreline in favour of the Spanish.

21:05 I was at the 3x3 basketball earlier today talking to FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann on everything from the 2014 FIBA World Cup to the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games bid. Project director for the bid, Greg Curchod, also joined us at the Wutaishan Basketball venue.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:53 The final taekwondo medal of the night has been decided and it goes to Azerbaijan's Said Guliyev in the men's under 73kg competition.

The Azerbaijani athlete beats Germany's Hamza Adnan Karim by 10 points to four to take the victory.

Bronze medals are awarded to Iran's Danial Salehimehr and Egypt's Seif Eissa.

20:45 We're coming towards the business end of the women's all-around artistic gymnastics competition where Russia's Seda Tutkhalyan holds a 1.2 point lead over Great Britain's Elissa Downie.

With just one apparatus to go, the Russian sits on 42.450 points. 

20:39 Today's tennis action has just come to a close at the Tennis Academy with competitors in the women's doubles final now decided.

In that final, the Russian pairing of Daria Kasatkina and Anastasiya Komardina will take on the Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina and Bulgaria's Irnya Shymanovich following straight sets wins in their respective semi-finals.

The Iranian beats Russian Yulia Turutina 10-7 to take the win.

20:10 Taekwondo finals are just about ready to get underway at the International Expo Centre following the conclusion of the four semi-finals.

Iran's Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin and Russia's Yulia Turutina will be gunning for gold in the women's under 63kg final while the men's under 73kg final sees Germany's Hamza Adnan Karim go head to head with Azerbaijan's Said Guliyev.

20:01 We spoke earlier about the unpredictability of the hockey5s on show here at these Games. One scoreline we certainly didn't expect was Japan's 26-1 thumping of Fiji earlier this evening. Mori Kanon was top scorer for the Japanese women after bagging seven goals.

Now, if I'm not mistaken, and feel free to correct me if I am, then that is quite some way shy of the world record in international hockey held by Slovakia after they thrashed Bulgaria 82-0 during the European pre-qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The scoreline does, however, top the Olympic record which was previously held by the Indian men's team after a 24-1 decimation of the United States at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Fiji's loss was their third double digit defeat at these Games after losing 22-0 to Argentina and 17-0 to The Netherlands.

Interestingly, The Netherlands also beat Japan 12-1 in yesterday's Pool matches.

This hockey5s is an exciting discipline, that's for sure...

19:50 One sport we've focused very little on here in Nanjing is the football. As we've still got a full weeks worth of fixtures this isn't too much of a problem.

Games have been running two-a-day during these Games with the men one day and the women the next.

Large scorelines have been recipe of the week with two 9-0s, a 7-0 and a pair of 5-0s proof of that.

Today is the day of the women with the first match of the day, which kicked off at 18:00 going the way of Slovakia as they thrashed Papua New Guinea 4-0. That was the Slovaks first win of the contest following a 6-2 drubbing by Venezuela in their opening encounter.

Next up at the Wutaishan Stadium is Namibia versus hosts China. China clocked a 2-0 win in their opening game against Mexico while Namibia, who also played Mexico, where demolished 9-0. That match doesn't kick off for another hour, however, so enough time for us to look elsewhere.

19:34 There are two gold medals still to be won in our official Nanjing 2014 "late-night sport" of taekwondo, in the boy's under 73kg and girls under 63kg. Okay, it's not that late. And it's even earlier in a lot of the rest of the world...

We also have the girl's all around gymnastics competition.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:25 And then it is Russia who win the final gold medal of the evening in the pool as their quartet leads from start to finish to win the boy's 4x100m medley relay, in 3:38.02, ahead of Germany and Australia. 


Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:15 Another swimming final, another Chinese gold and it is a 1-2 finish this time as Shen Duo leads home Qiu Yuhan in the 200m freestyle. 1:56.12 is the winning time.

19:08 And the great and good of the athletics community was present, including double Olympic 1,500m champion turned London 2012 chairman, Sebastian Coe, former world and Olympic 110m hurdles gold medal winner Liang Xiu - surely China's greatest ever track and field star - IAAF President Lamine Diack of Senegal, and Ukraine pole vault world record holder turned IOC Executive Board member Sergey Bubka.

18:56 A breather from all that frenetic action in the pool, and a reminder that it is the first night of athletics action tonight. The first athlete to win an athletics race at Nanjing 2014 is Fatuma Chebsi of Bahrain, who clocks a personal best of 9:06.87 to triumph in heat one of the girls 3,000m.

There are no medals to be won tonight but a lot of qualification action, including in long jump, pole vault and discus as well as in the sprints and hurdles.

Lithuanian London 2012 champion wins one of five swimming golds so far on day four

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:40 Rūta Meilutytė has won her second gold medal of the Games with victory in the 100m breaststroke. The world and Olympic champion and world record holder was always going to be virtually impossible to beat and she duly executed her race perfectly.

1:05.29 is the time from the Lithuanian. She knocks He Yun of China and Anastasiya Malyavina of Ukraine into second and third.

Apostolos Christou silver finishes second for Greece and there is a Mediterranean flavour to the minor medals as Italy's Simone Sabbioni takes bronze.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:21 Four finals back to back in the pool now and Ippei Watanabe of Japan wins the first, in the 200m breaststroke. Carlos Claverie of Venezuela takes silver, while the bronze medal goes to Anton Chupkov of Russia. 

18:18 The Caribbean nation may be best known for their prowess in the sport of sprinting, along with cricket, but both their Youth Olympic medals have now come in the pool. Christian Homer won 50m backstroke gold at Singapore 2010.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:15 Yu Hexin has broke the world junior record with a 22.00 clocking in the 50 free in the first swimming final of day four. Matheus Paulo de Santana of Brazil takes silver and the bronze medal is won by Dylan Carter of Trinidad and Tobago.

That is already a fourth gold medal of the day for China as they stretch their lead on our medals table. At the other end, that is a first medal for Trinidad and Tobago. 

18:09 I am hearing from a journalistic colleague that Japanese and Hong Kong China fencers were hand-in-hand in the medals ceremony as their Asia-Oceania team celebrated mixed continental team gold earlier. So another great moment of togetherness between places with political differences.

A Ukrainian shooting gold medallist was presented with his medal by a Russian IOC member earlier in the week, lest we forget.

Incidentally, it is the IOC Flag which rises during the medals ceremony in those continental events.

17:53 Probst also had this to say when asked: What is next for the IOC?

"The IOC is in the process of working through the Olympic Agenda 2020. I think there will be some interesting changes and reforms in the Olympic Movement that will all get crystalised at the Olympic Session in Monaco later this year. So I look forward to continuing that process and finalising that process to improve and better the Olympic Movement."

A little more restrained that his views earlier this summer then, when he raised the idea of IOC members being stripped of Olympic host city voting rights.

17:46 United States Olympic Committee chairman, and IOC member, Larry Probst, has been giving his views on Nanjing 2014 in an interview published on the Team USA website. Here is some of what he had to say...

It was an incredible extravaganza, particularly with the rain that was pouring down most of the night. It was just amazing that those performers could do such terrific work. I was able to spend some time in the Youth Olympic Village on Sunday (Aug 17). That is incredibly impressive. It seems that athletes are happy with the accommodations.

Yesterday I was able to attend several competitions. I saw rugby sevens for the first time, which is really fun to watch. I think that's going to be a great sport to watch during the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. I think Americans will have a blast watching rugby sevens on the NBC broadcast. I also saw beach volleyball. The rain didn't appear to affect the volleyball players. They were very happy to play in the rain and did a great job. Then in the afternoon we went to see gymnastics, and then weightlifting and swimming at night. I have a good sense of the athletic competitions going on.

"The volunteers are amazing. They are everywhere and have great attitudes. They do everything they can to be helpful and supportive. I think Alexander Popov, who's the head of the Coordination Commission, and his team did a great job with the Organising Committee here. It's really, really impressive. It feels like you're at the Olympic Games."

17:37 It is a rest day in weightlifting and judo today, in case you're wondering why you are not getting your daily dose of snatch and clean and jerk updates, so it's a little while yet until more medals are won.

But we're only one day away from medals in 3x3 basketball. There's already been two matches today in the boy's event and they have both been close. China beating Poland 18-15 before New Zealand edged Tunisia 18-16. 

17:30 Jumpei Yamasaki will have been inspired by this good luck message from Japanese number one, and world number 11, Kei Nishikori, before his competition in Nanjing. He is now through to the semi-final tomorrow. 



17:24 That match has reminded of an epic tennis final duel I was privileged to watch here last year during the Asian Youth Games. Ly Hoang Nam of Vietnam took 2 hours and 48 minutes to see off Jurence Mendoza of the Philippines on that occasion. Read about it here. 
 
Neither of those two players are participating here this year.

Japanese flag17:18 After a 72 minute second set in the tennis, the decider took a whistle-stop 32 minutes as Jumpei Yamasaki of Japan fought back from losing that second set tie break to beat Karen Khachanov of Russia 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in the boy's singles quarter-final.

17:10 I won't point you in the direction of our medals table yet as we haven't quite worked out how we are going to factor all of these continental medals in. We will get back to you on that!

But that is a first medal of the Games for Ireland, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador - that well known North American country - Cayman Islands, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal17:03 A second continental gold of the day and this time it goes to Europe in the showjumping. A dominant performance by the quintet of Matias Alvaro, Michael Duffy, Jake Saywell, Filip Agren and Lisa Nooren - of Italy, Ireland, Great Britain, Sweden and The Netherlands respectively.

Silver for South America. Francisco Carvelo Martinez of Uruguay, Antoine Poine of Chile, Valeria Jimenez Caballaro of Paraguay, Martina Campi of Argentina and Bianca Rodriguez De Souza of Brazil.

North America took bronze, and I'm going to go through the team again as there's some interesting countries in these. Polly Serpell of the Cayman Islands, Macarena Chiriboga Granja of Ecuador, Sabrina Rivera Mesa of El Salvador, Stefanie Brand of Guatemala, and Maria Gabriela Brugal of Dominican Republic. 

16:58 There have been some meaty contests in hockey 5s between some of the major medal contenders this afternoon. In the girl's event, The Netherlands superbly dispatched Argentina 6-0, before there was a 4-2 victory for New Zealand over Germany in the boy's event.

Anything can happen if this sport. Yesterday, Australia led 5-0 against South Africa with 12 minutes to go. They lost 6-5!

16:51 There has just been a 72 minute second set in the tennis, and we now have a decider to come, as Karen Khachanov wins the tie-break to make it 1-1 against Jumpei Yamasaki in the Russia v Japan boy's singles quarter-final. 

16:42 Some great pictures have surfaced of the first day of equestrian action yesterday, and the continental competition is a great way to get new countries involved in a sport which is not as accessible as some in certain parts of the world.

16:30 The next medals to be won today will come in another continental competition, this time in showjumping. Europe led after the first round and will be looking to continue that form this afternoon. 

16:23 Into the quarter-finals in tennis today, which is not a sport we have focused on much here so far. Jumpei Yamasaki of Japan has just won the first set 6-3 against Karen Khachanov of Russia in the boy's singles. 

Orlando Moraes Luz of Brazil is already safely through after beating Clement Geens of Belgium 6-2, 6-4, while Kamil Adrian Majchrzak of Poland is also through after his opponent, Lee Duckhee of South Korea, was unfortunately forced to retire through injury with the match locked at one set apiece. 

Fencing continental team gold for Asia/Oceania

Nanjing 2014 gold medal16:16 Asia/Oceania 1 have just claimed mixed team fencing gold. They defeat Team Europe 1 30-26 in the gold medal bout. The six strong winning team consists of one boy and one girl from South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, while three of the six European players are Russian. The remaining trio hail from Hungary, Poland and Italy. 

Team Europe 2 - consisting of two Swedes and one each from Poland, France, Greece and Italy - claim the bronze medal. 

16:08 And there is no rest for Muramatsu. He is already playing again, mixed doubles this time, in Japan's opening clash in the team competition against India.

Le Clos on hand to provide some swimming tips

15:50 One of the biggest names in the swimming world, Chad Le Clos of South Africa, has been providing a demonstration to young swimmers here this morning. The world and Olympic 200m butterfly champion, who is also world champion over 100m, instructed a group that included British team members, Martyn Walton and Luke Green.

Another example of the Youth Olympics helping to educate and advance athletes, rather than only provide them with competitive opportunities.

15:36 The mixed continental team fencing competition is nearing its conclusion with Team Europe 2 having just taken bronze after a victory over Team Asia-Oceania 2.

The final will begin shortly and sees the number one teams from both these continents taking centre stage again.

15:28 As I mentioned earlier, the IOC likes a bit of "mixing" here at the Youth Olympic Games, not only are there mixed team fencing and equestrian competitions happening here in Nanjing today, but we've also got ourselves a mixed team table tennis event and mixed team shooting contest, not to mention mixed team badminton!

Mixed international equestrian, shooting and table tennis are all happening here at the minute with plenty of results coming soon.

14:58 Canada's Tony Gil made Olympic history yesterday when he recorded the first ever hole-in-one in Olympic history. 

He ended the day on a handsome three under par to sit three behind the leaders, but sits even par after two rounds after a three over, 75 today.

Italy's Renato Paratore led the way today carding a 65 for five under par and will go into round three with that very same score after an even par first round.

Norway's Viktor Hovland will take a one shot lead on the final day after hitting back to back 68s for eight under par.

Thailand's Supamas Sangchan was top of the field in the women's contest as she shot six under par today. Her first round score of one over moves her down to five under for the tournament but she'll be right in contention tomorrow.

South Korea's Soyoung Lee proved that being so young doesn't stop you winning out on the course as she matched her three under par from yesterday with a four under, 68 today. She leads the women as we move into the final day of action.

14:49 Cyclist have been and gone over at the Laoshan Mountain Bike course athletes were competing in the fourth of the five team events.

Today's action was back to the mountain bikes with the cross-country Olympic competition.

The Czech Republic's Barbora Prudkova won the first mountain bike race (the eliminator), and repeated her success on the mountain's today, winning in a time of 43:21, 1:58 ahead of second placed Chiara Teocchi of Italy.

Despite also taking Czech glory in the opening men's mountain bike race Jan Rajchart had to settle for third today as Mexico's Jose Gerardo Ulloa Arevalo rode to victory in a time of 54:46.

Second place went to Colombia's Brandon Smith Rivera Vargas who finished behind Rajchart in the opening race of the event.

14:36 Handball proved a huge hit during the London 2012 Olympic Games despite rather little knowledge of the sport on British shores.

It's certain to have the same sort of popularity here in Nanjing with Russia and Angola kicking off the competition over at the Jiangning Sports Centre Gymnasium .

Russia currently lead 20-12.

14:05 After the disappointment of yesterday's sailing (or lack of), it's with great pleasure that I can give you an update on today's events over at the Jinniu Lake Sailing venue.

Low winds were the cause of yesterday's problems, which saw all techno 293 races rescheduled, however, after a few early morning delays, we've had a full schedule playing out today.

Race five in the men's and women's byte cll one person dinghy saw victory for Singapore's Cheok Khoon Bernie Chin and Great Britain's Hanna Brant respectively, while race six brought wins for Portugal's Rodolfo Pires and the Dominican Republic's Celeste Lugtmeijer Cathelier.

The abandoned techno 293 windsurfing races were won by China's Linli Wu and Russia's Mariam Sekhposyan on the women's side, and Russia's Maxim Tokarev and Argentina's Francisco Cruz Saubidet Birkner on the men's.

Last I left it the world number three was 2-1 down but he hit back to take three games on the bounce and the gold medal.

A great effort by Japan's Yuru Muramatsu, however, once Fan got a read of his backhand slice the game turned heavily in his favour.

13:31 Golfing action is drawing to a close over at the Zhongshan International Golf Club with a lot of shaking and moving going on across the leaderboard.

Sticking with just the second round scores and Renato Paratore is having a marvellous round in the men's competition. The Italian is five under par through 15 holes and moving his way up the overall table.

The leaders from yesterday, Marcus Kinhalt of Sweden and Brett Coletta of Australia, are on one under and even par respectively as they come to the last couple of holes.

Norway's Viktor Hovland finished on four under par yesterday and came into the club house with the same result today. That puts him on eight under par and top of the pile as it stands.

In the women's, Thailand's Supamas Sangchan shot one over par yesterday but is leading today's scoring with a huge six under. She still has two holes to play over at Zongshan International.

There is the obvious rivalry between Japan and China, we are unable to hear if there are boos from the relative sanctity of the media centre, but you can assume that the support will be fairly partisan. But it is also a tantalising attack versus defence affair. It is a an unfashionable way to play these day, but how Muramatsu is chopping some of these balls back into play is remarkable. But Chinese players are tough mentally as well as ferocious physically and I still see Fan as the favourite. The Chinese player, remember, is the world number three in the senior rankings, while Muramatsu is the number 42 and reached the semi-finals of the Japan Open earlier this year. So this must be one of highest-standard matches across any sport here in Nanjing, and it is living up to the hype so far."

They finish in 3:11.27 less than a second ahead of the Czech Republic.

The Romanian duo of Cristina Gerogiana Popescu and Denisa Tolvescu finish just 0.2 seconds ahead of China to secure the gold in 3:37.32.

Naske set a fast opening pace and just managed to hold off a late charge by Azerbaijan's Boris Yotov to take victory in 3:21.22.

11:35 It's looking rather busy at the Fangsehn Shooting Hall and I think we all know why that is... Haoran Yang is closing in on the gold in the men's 10 air rifle competition. 

11:21 Golfers are out and about at the Zhongshan International Golf Club as round two gets up and running. Australia's Brett Coletta shared a tie of the lead with Sweden's Marcus Kinhalt after round one of the men's while four golfers sat atop the women's leaderboard on three under par.

11:10 We're now into the finals of that men's 10m air rifle competition after Chinese favourite Haoran Yang shot best in the qualifying round.

The world number one's score of 629.4 was just under five points higher than that of Armenia's Hrachik Babayan who shot 624.8.

We're into the third round of the final and it's Yang who leads. 

11:04 After that dynamite clash in the rugby sevens it's time to head back to the table tennis where America's Lily Zhang has claimed bronze in the women's singles.

The 18-year-old lost the first game but bounced back to take the tie 4-2 over Japan's Miyu Kato.

10:01 The highly anticipated rugby sevens women's gold medal clash has just begun at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Park Sports Park with Canada taking on a highly favoured Australian team.

Early morning fixtures saw China take the bronze medal with a 12-0 victory over United States.

Men's bronze went to Fiji after they beat Kenya 12-0. The fight for the men's gold medal will be between Argentina and France.

09:40 The IOC is all about friendship and connections here at the Youth Olympic Games. Today's mixed team fencing event is yet further proof of that.

As with the team event in the equestrian, the team fencing competition sees continents competing against one another with each team made up of the best of the best from each continent.

• The first bout will finish when the first fencer makes five hits, or after three minutes if neither of them has made five hits
• The second bout will finish when the first fencer reaches the team cumulative score of ten, or after six minutes
• The third bout will finish when the first fencer reaches the team cumulative score of 15, or after nine minutes; and so on

A team match is finished either after 30 hits or after the sixth bout. Winners of the semifinals will compete for the gold medal, and losers for the bronze medal.

The first match has Team Africa competing against one of the two Team Americas teams.

09:25 With the first equestrian medal event of the Games comes a unique jumping international team event. Here, six teams made up of five riders from each continent compete against one another for gold, with the team scoring the least amount of penalty points on their runs taking the top prize.

All riders from each team complete the course with the three best runs from each team going towards their final score.

Europe led yesterday's qualifier scoring zero points with South America their closest rivals on four.

09:19 As has been the case since the end of the triathlon, our first gold medal of the day will be won at the Fangshan Shooting Hall with the men's 10m air rifle top of the agenda today.

The spotlight will be on Chinese world number one Haoran Yang with the 18-year-old hoping to claim the host's first shooting gold medal of the Games.

Qualification is already underway, with Yang already asserting his dominance.
