It is just bronze medals today in boxing, with the finals then to come over the next two days. 

14:52 Boxing bronze medal matches have been taking place in boxing. It is an unusual format here because in most amateur boxing competitions, two bronze medals are awarded. But given the small number of rounds, there is only one available here.

14:40 It is very hot today here, as we take a few moments to take in the heat during a relative lull in the action. It says 33'C but the humidity make it feels an awful lot hotter than that, especially when you are sporting our black, insidethegames branded, polo shirts. 

14:26 Sweden have taken the bronze medal in girl's handball with a 23-16 victory over Brazil, avenging well their defeat to South Korea yesterday. The second semi-final will be up soon.

14:16 The morning programme is over in Greco Roman wrestling but we have medal matches to come later on. 

14:05 Back in the bronze match, and it's quite nice to be able to focus on one sport for the time being, Sweden are 14-8 in front of Brazil. The Swedes were so close to the final, losing by one point to South Korea, and they seem a little sharper at the moment.

But as we saw yesterday, Brazil are a physical team and they don't back down easily. The South American nation have played in the last four Olympic Games in women's handball. They came eighth in Sydney, seventh in Athens, ninth in Beijing and sixth in London.

They will be hoping for a sniff of a medal on home turf in two years time, and it will be interesting to see how many of today's team will feature there.

13:52 It will be Slovenia against Egypt later on in the boy's final, the only two unbeaten teams in the competition. Egypt have had a good Games here in Nanjing and are also the defending champions.

South Korea will also face Russia in the girl's final. 



13:40 This handball match is the only sport currently taking place in Nanjing as the last of the golfers wrap up their rounds. 

Sweden lead 11-5 at the break and look set to take the bronze medal.

13:25 The same can't be said about the JSC Gymnasium where Brazil and Sweden have just taken to the court for the women's bronze medal final.

Their match follows that of the men's 5-6 placed playoff where Brazil triumphed over Tunisia by 28 goals to 27.

13:21 Wresting has drawn to an end with a whopping 49 matches taking place already today. More bouts are set to follow at 17:00 this evening but for now there is quiet over at the Longjiang Gymnasium.

13:04 It's a big day for 3x3 basketball today as we finally move into the knockout phase of competition. 

Lithuania have been the dominant force in the men's contest, winning all eight of their Pool A fixtures. Argentina led the way in Pool B as they recorded seven wins and a single defeat to end top of that group.

On the women's side, the Unites States have been on absolute dynamite form, winning all their games before the final buzzer by reaching the 21 point mark. The girls topped Pool B with nine wins out of nine while The Netherlands and Hungary recorded a 8-1 win to loss ratio to top Pool A.



Reunited after 12 years...

12:50 It's the Youth Olympic Games equivalent of the notebook, well kind of... Two play mates from Singapore have met here in Nanjing after 12 years of no contact. 

"Ava Lorein Verdeflor of the Philipines and Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore grew up as neighbours in Singapore, but when Verdeflor was three years old, her family moved. The 15-year-old artistic gymnast now lives in a suburb of Dallas, Texas in the United States. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Veloso still lives in Singapore where she qualified for these Games in shooting.

"And while their meeting in Nanjing was not completely serendipitous – the families had kept in touch and knew both girls had qualified for the Games – it was not entirely expected when they did see one another again.

"'I think I saw her [one day] but I wasn't really sure it was her and I would feel embarrassed if I approached the wrong person,' Veloso said. 'At the same time, Ava and her mum came to my apartment twice to see whether I was around but I wasn't at the times they visited. Until one day we met in the dining hall, by coincidence.'

"Verdeflor said she had been excited to reconnect with a girl who had once been a play mate of hers, but at the same time, it was like meeting a whole new person. After all, there is a huge difference between toddlers and teenagers. 'I was really excited to see her but obviously I didn't know what to expect,' Verdeflor said. 'I mean, we were three years old when I last saw her, so I don't remember much.'

"But the talk was not a nervous one, Verdeflor said. She described it as 'awesome' to be reunited with an old friend.

"The girls' conversation was predominantly about current events rather than their Singapore days. Verdeflor congratulated Veloso on the silver medal she won in the women's 10m air rifle competition and Veloso wished Verdeflor luck in her events.

"'We were just talking about the last time [we were together] and whether either of us could remember anything,' Veloso said. 'But unfortunately we couldn't.'

"The two girls did, however, remember a photo that Verdeflor's mother had taken of them when they were young – which they recreated here in Nanjing. Veloso even recreated the same big smile she had in the original.  'This isn't something you see every day and it's really cool,' Veloso said. 'Furthermore, one of the Olympic values is friendship and this is what friendship really means.'



"It is an amazing feeling to win silver, I am so happy. It was the hottest conditions I have ever run in but well worth it obviously. My fencing was really good and it went really well. I had loads of confidence from the first fence and that helped me the second time again. Winning the medal has given me loads of experience for the future and who knows, maybe Rio next, we will see."

12:28 We're not seeing the tantalisingly high scores we saw yesterday in the golf with Denmark's John Paul Pultz Pinnerup Axelsen and Emily Kristine Pedersen still holding a strong lead at seven under par.

Yesterday's leaders Lee and Youm have entered the clubhouse on one under par after shooting a 71 today. Italy's Renato Paratore, who won the men's individual competition, and partner Virginia Elena Carta ended on even par after a 10 under 66 yesterday.

It looks like the Danes are set to enter the first round as our leaders with a combined score of 14 under par. They still have two holes to play, however.

12:09 Australia's Brett Coletta and Elizabeth Elmassian had a great start to the mixed teams golf contest yesterday after finishing just two strokes down on South Korea's Soyoung Lee and Eun Ho Youm. 

The pair are one under through 10 holes in today's play as they look to put pressure on the leaders...



Early morning medals for France

11:56 It's been a good day already for France as they shared in some early morning medal success with Yanis Esmeralda David taking gold in the women's triple jump and Victor Coroller sealing bronze in the men's 400m hurdles. 



11:50 The handball golf and wrestling are the only three sports in the spotlight at the minute with archery, athletics and diving all taking a break.

Shengping Wu retained her form to finish as the top qualifier in the women's 3m springboard with a change in positions for Mexico's Alejandra Orozco Loza and Malaysia's Zhiayi Lo as the Mexican moves into second.

A lot of action is taking place in the wrestling with a whole Greco-Roman programme to get through today.

11:45 Brazil are leading Tunisia 13-12 in the second leg of 5-6 place playoff of the men's handball. The Brazilians won the first leg 38-31 and look on course to claim fifth in that contest. 

The earlier women's match saw China and Angola tie 22 apiece. The result means Angola claim fifth in that competition after dominating the opening leg.

11:40 Denmark's John Paul Pultz Pinnerup Axelsen and Emily Kristine Pedersen are flying in the mixed team golf. The duo carded a 65, seven under par yesterday and have already hit the mark today after just 11 holes. Taiwan's Chun-An Yu and Ssu-Chia Cheng are their closest competitors and sit five strokes behind on two under for the day.

11:30 We're coming to the closing stages of he women's 3m springboard qualifier where a few familiar faces are dominating proceedings.

China's Shengping Wu, winner of the 10m platform, leads the way with a score of 109.85 after eight dives. She's followed by Malaysia's Zhiayi Loh and Mexico's Alejandra Orozco Loza who came second and third respectively in the 10m platform...



11:20 The final two archery contests have concluded over at the Fangshan Archery Field with Poland's Sylwia Zyzanska and Brazil's Ana Machado the final competitors to progress to the quarter-final stage.

11:13 Now this is pretty awesome. IOC Young Reporters here in Nanjing have been toying with Google Glass over the past week or so. The equipment, which looks like a pair of ordinary glasses, allows you to record what's happening from your own point of view using some high tech gadgetry, I believe... I went to try them out last week but, with so many things in my life, they broke as soon as I got my hands on them...

11:04 And it's gold for China. Zhihang Xu crosses the line in a personal best 50.61 to seal the win, but only just. It takes a photo finish to determine Xu the victor as Tunisia's Mohamed Fares Jlassi puts in a brilliant performance to match the Chinese runners time.

That run is nearly a second quicker than Jlassi's previous personal best!

In third is Victor Coroller.

10:58 There could be more medals for the hosts over at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre as the men line up for the 400m final.

Zhihang Xu was fastest in qualifying and looks good to add a 32nd gold for China. He'll face stiff opposition from Thailand's Witthawat Thumcha, France's Victor Coroller and Brazil's Mikael Antonio De Jesus, however.  

10:55 France's Melanie Gaubil, Spain's Alicia Marin, China's Jiaman Li and Japan's Miasa Koike have all progressed to the quarter-finals of the women's recurve competition over at the Fangshan Archery Field.

And it looks like a a familiar face has joined them to celebrate...



10:50 An update from the International Hockey Federation now following an exciting day of women's hockey5s yesterday. Today brings more men's action with finals set to take place over the next two days. 

"Two top class semi-finals in the women's competition today designated the Netherlands and China the 2014 Youth Olympic Games finalists.

"In a semi-final that was another instance of the defining women's rivalry in the last few years, the Netherlands took on Argentina. The Leoncitas scored first, but saw the tables turned midway through the match, and while Argentina succeeded in levelling the scores again, another Dutch double hit eventually finalized the ticket into the final for the Oranje ladies.

"Hosts China and Japan locked horns over the other place in the big final, in a match that kept spectators in the packed stadium on the edge of their seats. The game seesawed back and forth, and neither team was ever able to build a comfortable lead. A pair of goals from Zhang Jinrong midway through the match gave China the lead for the first time, and turned out to be the decider at the end of the day despite the Japanese women's best efforts.

"The crossovers for fifth to eighth place saw Uruguay defeat Germany and New Zealand subdue South Africa.

"In the match for 9th place, Zambia was stronger than Fiji today, claiming victory in the two teams' last appearance on the fields of the Olympic Sports Park."

10:25 And it's the Kokeb Tesfaye Alemu who takes the gold! The Ethiopian must have been toying with the athletes in qualifying as she runs a 4:15.38 to take the win. That's six seconds quicker than her previous time. 

Kenya's Winfred Mbithe is two seconds behind in second while Dalila Gosa of Bahrain knocks three second off her personal best to take the bronze.

10:20 With the end of the triple jump comes the start of the women's 1500m final.

Ethiopia's Kokeb Tesfaye Alemu was fastest in qualifying and will be favourite for gold here. That's not to rule out Kenya's Winfred Mbithe or Germany's Konstanze Klosterhalfen who will also no doubt be in with a shot for gold.

10:15 Three personal bests brought an end to the women's triple jump as France's Yanis Esmeralda David seals the gold.

The French jumper added 27cm to her qualification jump to take the gold in a distance of 13.33m.

Australia's Tay-Leiha Clark also jumped a personal best 13.06m to secure silver with a PB for Hungary's Eszter Bajnok bringing her bronze.

10:05 Sailors will have welcomed a steady breeze yesterday as they were able to complete the medal races of all four sailing contests following delays caused by lack of (or in one case too much) wind.

"Bernie Chin and Samantha Yom made it double gold for Singapore as they took the Boy's and Girl's Byte CII Youth Olympic Games titles in Nanjing, China.

"Chin held on to his overnight lead whilst Yom advanced from second to first in a gripping final day of the Youth Olympic sailing competition.

"The Byte CII fleets raced in a steady 4-5 knot breeze that was coming from an easterly direction and the tension was high in both races.

"Rodolfo Pires of Portugal and Jonatan Vadnai of Hungary took silver and bronze in the Boy's Byte CII whilst the female silver went to Odile van Aanholt of The Netherlands and bronze to Jarian Brandes of Peru.



"Argentina's Francisco Saubidet Birkner and China's Linli Wu claimed the Boy's and Girl's Techno 293 honours as sailing concluded at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China.

"A single undiscardable race brought the Techno 293 racing to a close with the conditions testing the 20 boy's and 21 girl's racers who took to the course. Three knots gusting up to eight knots from an easterly direction made life tough on the race course with those with excellent tactical nous and light wind prowess excelling."

09:58 B Finals in the men's and women's 2,000m steeplechase, as well as the women's javelin throw, have come to and end with wins for Sudan's Hossny Eisa, Syria's Fatima Raya and Serbia's Atina Kamasi. 

09:53 Archers have taken to the field over at the Fangshan Archery Field as the women's recurve round of 16 competition gets underway. Wins for South Korea's Eun Gyeong Lee and Yasemin Ecem Anagoz of Turkey have seen them progress to the quarter-finals already this morning.

The two will now play each other in that quarter-final stage from 15:00, with finals set to begin at around 16:26.

09:45 The United States' Noah Lyles won a superb gold in the men's 200m final last night, beating Jamaica's Chad Walker, who was later disqualified, and Botswana's Baboloki Thebe to the line. 

It turns out, the young sprinter joined team mate and women's 200m bronze medallist Brandee Johnson the night before the race in practicing their starts and imagining what it would be like to win a medal on the world stage.

"We were both down on the floor in our starting positions – just the two of us – and we imagined the gun going off," said Johnson. "We envisioned the whole race. And now that it's happened, I still can't believe it. It feels like I'm dreaming."

"It feels amazing to know that we can represent our country in the same event and come out with the gold and the bronze. I was so excited to run, but being able to come out here and win gold on this stage is just amazing. There are not enough words to explain the emotion that I'm feeling right now."



09:38 The first handball match of the day has hosts China up against Angola in the second leg of the women's 5-6th place playoff. Angola won the first leg 31-18 and look on course to grab fifth place in this contest as they leg 11-9 in the second. It'll take something special for the hosts to pull this one back...

09:33 The first gold medal contest of the day will begin in a couple of minutes as women's long jumpers get set to take to the field. France's Yanis Esmeralda David led the way in qualifying after a jump of 13.06m. Australia's Tay-Leiha Clark was the only other athlete to break the 13.00m mark as she jumped the distance exactly in a personal best distance.

09:26 We're underway in three sports already this morning with athletes from the mixed golf competition, handball and athletics already taking centre stage.

The South Korean pairing of Soyoung Lee, winner of the women's individual strokeplay contest, and Eun Ho Youm led the way in round one of the golf yesterday. The duo currently sit on even par after two holes of the second round with pairs from The Netherlands and Denmark making early headway in today's play as they sit one under par.

09:19 Russia's Seda Tutkhalyan finished second in the women's floor exercise competition last night, adding silver to the all-around gold and uneven bars gold she had already picked up during these Games.

09:11 Speaking of the wrestling, here's what the governing body of the sport (FILA) have had to say about its long awaited appearance...

"Wrestlers from across six continents have gathered this week in eastern China to kickoff the wrestling programme of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games.

"The tournament, highlighted by an impressive six cadet world champions, will be competed in men's freestyle, female wrestling and Greco-Roman and includes a total of 111 wrestlers from 46 countries.

"'We are excited to have our young athletes participate in the Youth Olympic Games,' said FILA president Nenad Lalovic. 'The YOG is an important way to introduce our young athletes to the ideals of the Olympic Games and we hope that our wrestlers enjoy the competition and their first Olympic experience.'

"On the mat, the YOG wrestling event will feature more than a dozen medalists from the 2014 FILA Cadet Wrestling World Championships held last month in Humenne, Slovakia.

"Russia's Arslan Zubairov highlights the Greco-Roman portion of the competition as he looks to defend his 58kg cadet world title Monday in Nanjing. Bronze medalist Dadov Islambek of Azerbaijan will be competing at 69kg along with Robert Manville of the United States who won a cadet world title in freestyle, but is competing in Greco-Roman.

"The female wrestling competition will have a trio of Cadet world title holders hoping to stake their claim to a golden YOG. Two-time cadet champion Olena Kremzer of Ukraine will look to defend against a packed field at 52kg, including cadet world silver medalist Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan. Grace Jacob Bullen of Norway will face a similar challenge as she seeks to defend her 60kg her title against world silver medalist Koumba Selene Larroque of France. Germany's Nicole Amann will also want to keep an eye out for familiar opponent Natalia Strzalka of Poland who she bested in the 70kg finals last month.

"Men's freestyle will be lead by the Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan who was brilliant in Slovakia and will wrestle to defend his 63kg gold medal. The freestyle big men are also showing up in force for the Youth Olympic Games, with cadet bronze medalist Dmitri Ceacusta leading the charge at 100kg and Japan's Yajuro Yamasaki of Japan wrestling to improve upon on his 76kg bronze medal performance."

09:06 After the staggering 32 gold medals on offer yesterday, we're down to a slightly more reasonable 20 today with a first taste of medal action from the handball, as well as medals in the athletics (of course), archery and diving. 

We're also graced with the presence of a new sport today as wrestling finally makes its much anticipated appearance at these Games. There are five gold medals from the Greco-Roman form of the sport today with freestyle due to start tomorrow.
