Good night!

22:30 And on that note, it's good night from the insidethegames team in China. We will back, as ever at 09:00 tomorrow morning.

22:28 We will leave you with this great shot of the Youth Olympic Village lit up at night, at the end of hot and muggy but much drier day than yesterday.

22:25 With all the action over we are going to wrap things up on the insidethegames blog after another great day of action.

From handballers hurling their way to glories to wrestlers grappling the mat and archers holding their nerve to shoot the perfect 10 in a shoot-out, we have had another great, if hot, day here in Nanjing. And it's amazing to think that there are only two more days of action to come.

Tomorrow, as well as medals action in football, boxing, wrestling, modern pentathlon, archery, 3x3 basketball, hockey 5s, beach volleyball and golf, we will have the 8x100m relay in athletics, although not the the usual stadium. It promises to be one of the most innovative events of them all...

A shameless plug I know, but please read our latest blog: "An afternoon in the life of the IOC President"An afternoon in the life of the IOC President"

Slovenia secure handball victory over Egypt

Nanjing 2014 gold medal22:21 Action is over at the JSC Gymnasium and Slovenia have won the boy's handball title with a 31-25 victory over Egypt in the final. Blaz Janc and Gal Marguc the stars for the Europeans, each converting eight of their 12 shots.

Norway won bronze earlier after getting the better of Qatar.

22:16 Final whistle in the football as Honduras win 5-0 in the end over Vanuatu in the boy's fifth place playoff. Venezuela will face China in the women's final tomorrow evening, remember, at the Wutaishan Stadium.

22:10 Slovenia now have a five goal lead over Egypt in the handball, so it's looking a tough ask for the team from Africa.

22:03 Over in basketball 3x3, we have the four boy's quarter-final results to bring you. France beat Romania 19-11, Argentina beat Venezuela 21-13, Russia won 12-8 over Brazil, and Lithuania beat Poland, 16-12.

Slovenia Flag21:56 But the final gold medal of the day will come in handball. Defending champions Egypt are up against Slovenia, but it's the European side who have taken a 13-11 lead at half time.

21:52 Just to wrap up some classification action before we get onto the medals. Papua New Guinea defeated Namibia 3-2 in the girl's fifth place play off in football, while Honduras lead Vanuatu 4-0 in the boy's event.

21:46 And the bronze medal goes to the Russian as Marat Kerimkhanov takes a 3-0 victory over his Azerbaijani opponent. So, that is it for boxing bronzes, but the gold medal matches begin in earnest tomorrow.

It's team sports all the way from here on in.

21:38 Ireland do win that bronze medal, as Michael Gallagher defeats Kim Jin Neong of South Korea, 3-0. The 5th place playoff in the super heavyweight competition is a walkover so straight into the final bronze medal match of the evening...

Mahammadali Tahirov of Azerbaijan up against Marat Kerimkhanov of Russia. Two of the powerhouses of the heavier weight categories facing off here.

Ethiopia and Kenya share steeplechase golds to wrap up action on the track

Nanjing 2014 gold medal21:24 We talked about the Kenya-Ethiopia rivalry earlier, well Ethiopia have got swift revenge as Wogene Sebisibe Sidamo wins the 2,000m steeplechase in 5:38.42.

Amos Kirui of, you've guessed it, Kenya, was second, and Hicham Chemlal of Morocco third.

Twitter logo@olympiccouncil @IABABOXING Michael Gallagher bronze medal bout starting now Come on Michael
- Boxing action is still going on, and I'm sure the Olympic Council of Ireland will keep us updated.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal21:16 Hanna Tarasiuk of Belarus has won the javelin with a PB of 59.52. Six metres behind was Fabienne Schonig of Germany, with Nagisa Mori of Japan in third.

That leaves just one athletics gold medal to be won this evening, and they are on track now in the boy's 2,000m steeplechase.

21:11 Speaking of boxing, Luca Plantic of Croatia won that under 75kg bronze we mentioned earlier, beating Kozimbek Mardonov of Uzbekistan 3-0.

Quote marks"The bronze means everything to me because training has not been great because I got a cut eye about five or six weeks ago. That meant that I stopped sparring early so this tournament was the first time I was back in the ring for more than a month and my fitness was no where near to what it normally is and neither was my timing but I still got a medal so I am over the moon. Obviously I have not been sparring so I have had to do more running, more bag work, more pads to make up for the sparring and I am really happy to get a bronze."
- Great Britain's Muhammad Ali overcame a pre-competition injury to take bronze today. Overcoming adversity in the same style as a famous namesake did throughout his career.

21:08 A close hockey match being won by Australia reminded me of the Commonwealth Games, where Australia scored the equalising goal with, if I recall correctly 11 seconds to go, in the women's final against England, before winning on penalties.

It is a bit hotter and bit dryer here in China that it was that evening in Glasgow, but they don't lie down easily those Aussies.

Twitter logoHockey5s are through to the gold medal match! The boys won a tense game 4-3 over South Africa. @HockeyAustralia @nanjing2014yog #GoAus
- The Australian Olympic Committee are understandably pleased with hockey action.

21:02 Back to the 3x3 basketball, and just to recap of those girl's quarter-final results. Hungary beat Germany 20-13 - that result is fairly emblematic of the contrasting fortunes of the two nations here in Nanjing - the US beat Estonia 21-12, Spain edged Belgium 16-14 and The Netherlands knocked out China: 21-13.

Kenyan wins gold in the steeplechase

Kenyan flag20:55 Kenya versus Ethiopia in distance running is one of the biggest rivalries in sport. And in my time as an athletics fan, while Kenya have a bigger quantity of runners, Ethiopian have tended to have one outstanding individual, who has taken the win, at least in 5,000 and 10,000m that is. Kenya have always been a class apart in the steeplechase.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:48 Rosefline Chepngetich has won gold for Kenya in the 2,000m steeplchase. She gets the better of Zewdinesh Teklemarium of Ethiopia with a four second victory, stopping the clock at 6:22.67.

In third place, in a PB of 6:31.92, is Lili Ana Toth of Hungary.

- There is a sense of inevitability about proceedings in 3x3, according to the Young Reporters.

20:39 Another boxing bronze medal to bring you now. Turkey have been a constant presence across a lot of bouts today and they have just managed another podium finish. Adem Furkan Avci beats Bibert Tumenov of Russia to win the under under 64kg bronze.

Kozimbek Mardonov of Uzbekistan is just getting going against Lika Plantic of Croatia in the under 75kg bout.

Triple jump gold for Suriname

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:32 We've got a first Olympic athletics gold medal for Suriname as Miguel Van Assen secures victory in the men's triple jump. That's just a second Olympic gold medal ever for the small South American nation and their third medal in total.

Van Assen jumps 16.15m to fend off the challenges of Italy's Tobia Bochi and Azerbaijan's Nazim Babayev in second and third respectively.

20:25 It will be a Spain v Australia final in the men's hockey5s after the Aussies edged to a 4-3 win over South Africa in the second semi-final of the evening. The team from Down Under did the hard work in the first half and led 2-0 coming into the break. Despite a fight back by the South African's in the second, Australia were able to hold on and set a tasty encounter with Spain Wednesday evening.

20:20 A quick look to the JSC Stadium where Papua New Guinea have sealed fifth in the women's football competition following a 3-2 victory over Namibia.

Honduras and Vanuatu set to go head to head in the men's equivalent at 20:45

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:14 The golds are flooding in now. Myles Marshall is the next man to taste the scent of victory as the American wins the men's 800m final.

He finishes in 1:49.14, just fractions of a second quicker than Uganda's Geofrey Balimumiti who sets a personal best 1:49.37 for silver.

Bronze is won Bacha Morka Mulata of Ethiopia.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:05 And the final wrestling gold of the evening goes to Mark Bemalian of Russia as he beats Bulgaria's Kiril Milov.

Egypt's Ahmed Ahmed is the bronze medallist in this category.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:00 The penultimate gold of the Greco-Roman wrestling competition has gone to Azerbaijan as Islambek Dadov seals a victory over America's Mason Manville in the 69kg contest.

Kazakhstan took the bronze in this division through Yevgeniy Polivadov.

South Korean gold in handball

Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:56 And South Korea have won our first handball gold medal here in Nanjing, beating Russia 32-31 in the women's competition.

An absolute blinder of an encounter this one, with the Koreans leading 17-14 at the break and just holding onto their lead following a late onslaught by the Russia. A well deserved win, but an agonisingly close one at that..

19:50 A couple more bronze medals have been dished out in the boxing with Japan's Subaru Murata beating Kazakhstan's Shalkar Aikhynbay in the light flyweight division and Great Britain's Peter McGrail sealing a win over Salem Tamma of Algeria in the bantamweight contest.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:40 We'll dive straight back into the sport now and there's been a medal in the athletics.

It goes to Frenchman Lukas Moutarde as he takes top honours in the men's javelin.

Moutarde's personal best throw of 74.48 was half a metre further than that of Romania's Alexandru Mihaita Nova in second while Hungary's Mark Xaver Schmolcz was over two metres back in third

19:35 I'm going to pull you away from the sport briefly now with a quick word from our very own Nick Butler on our happenings this evening...

Nick Butler"Both myself and my colleague Paul have just had our first attempt at sport climbing here this evening. I was expecting it to be difficult, and it was, but not really in the way I expected. The challenge, I found, was my lack of upper body strength. We both did reasonably well on the lower and middle sections on the vertical climb but lacked the arm strength to haul ourselves up once it got tougher. And at the end, I was utterly exhausted, my arms still tingling now as I type. As well as realising my startling lack of fitness, it made me realise that few other sports encapsulate the Olympic theme of 'faster, higher, stronger' better than this one."

Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:31
The golds are coming thick and fast now as Russia's Arslan Zubairov seals the deal against Armenian Zaven Mikaelyan in the 58kg division of the Greco-Roman wrestling.

There was more bronze medal success for Iran in this contest with Keramat Abdevali defeating Argentine Agustin Alejandro Destibats

Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:24 Back to the athletics and South Africa's Gezelle Magerman has won gold in the women's 400m hurdles.

A personal best time of 57.91 ensures the victory for the South African as she comes home ahead of Slovakia's Michaela Peskova, who also set a personal best time of 58.26

In fact, the top three all set personal best times with Denmark's Anne Sofie Fruerskov Kirkegaard taking third in 58.60.

19:14 In the hockey5s, New Zealand pulled off a 9-2 victory over Pakistan in the final classification match of the evening and will now face Pakistan in the 5-6 placed playoff. That fixture will be played tomorrow.

Before that, however, we have some semi-final action. Canada narrowly edged Spain in the first of the two encounters to book a place in the final with Australia and New Zealand set to take to the pitch soon.

19:05 The action is just about kicking off at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre where we have eight athletics gold medals up for grabs this evening. First up is the men's javelin and pole vault competitions

19:00 Some updates on the men's boxing from early for you now...

Italy's Vincenzo Lizzi has taken bronze in the men's welterweight division after a technical knockout on Belorussian Ilyas Adzinayeu while Armenia's Narek Manasyan has recorded a split decision points victory over Great Britain's Viddal Riley to win bronze in the light heavyweight weight category.

18:57 Away from the wrestling for a minute and 3x3 basketball is back up and running at the Longjiang Gymnasium. Tonight sees the last 16 and quarter-final stages of the competition get underway with wins for Germany, Hungary, Estonia, United States, Spain and Belgium already in the women's, while France, Romania, Venezuela, Argentina, Poland and Lithuania have recorded wins in the men's.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:45 More gold in wrestling where Ilkhom Bakhromov of Uzbekistan has beaten Azerbaijan's Jabbar Najafov in the 50kg contest.

Bronze here was picked up by Iranian wrestler Mohammadreza Aghaniachari.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:37 Moving towards the north of Korean now and Seung Ri has won the first gold medal of the wrestling competition. He beat Turkey's Fatih Aslan in the 49kg category.

Bronze was won by Ukraine's Oleksii Masyk.

18:35 South Korea are leading Russia 17-14 in the women's handball final. We're deep into the second half of that fixture so keep your eyes and ears at the ready.

18:34 A lot of final action happening right across Nanjing now. Stick your reading glasses on, I'll update you now...

18:18 Norway did win that boy's handball bronze medal with a hard-fought but reasonably comfortable 33-25 final scoreline over Qatar.

Now we have the girl's final: South Korea against Russia

Chinese gold medals in diving and archery

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:11 Wu Shengping scores 61.20 with her final dive to finish on a total of 492.05 to win yet another diving gold for China.

Ganna Krasnoshlyk of Ukraine was second, with 459.10 points, with Lo Zhiayi of Malaysia back in third.

18:02 French Chef de Mission Tony Estanguet has posted our first "IOC member" selfie of the Games at the canoeing yesterday, alongside Thomas Bach. Estanguet, the triple Olympic champion in the slalom version of the sport, is a member of the IOC Athletes' Commission.

17:54 One dive to come in the girl's 3m springboard and we are heading for another Chinese victory. Wu Shengping is our leader.

But I remember writing similar words during the Commonwealth Games, only for England's Jack Laugher to miss his final dive, and consequently have to settle for silver. What will happen this time?

17:43 A final bronze medal result to bring you now, in the girl's boxing. Caitlin Parker of Australia beats Ireland's Christina Desmond to win the final medal in the under 75kg division.

Ireland boast perhaps the world's most famous female boxer, Olympic champion Katie Taylor, but they are unable to feature on the podium this time around.

17:32 Wins for Germany and Pakistan over Zambia and Bangladesh so far in the two hockey 5s boy's classification matches. The semi-finals are coming up later.

And in the boy's handball bronze medal match, Norway are heading for victory over Qatar.

17:23 Li shot a 10 in comparison with nine for Gaubil. Fine margins. Fine margins indeed. But being so mentally strong and able to perform best when the pressure is on is a key quality for these young athletes to learn.

And it is a fundamental reason why the Chinese are so successful.

Li Jiaman speaks after securing gold ©World Archery

Nanjing 2014 gold medal17:15 It is gold for China as Li Jiaman beats Melanie Gaubil of France, six sets to five, in a thrilling finale to claim archery gold.

There was very little between the two but the home player held her nerve to come out on top in the shootout.

That is her second gold medal of the Games after team victory yesterday alongside a male archer from the Philippines. Luis Gabriel Moreno.

17:01
Diving action of the girl's 3m springboard is beginning, but we are going to stick with the archery for a moment. It's always seen as a traditional sport. What other sport has as its most famous figure - in Great Britain at least - a 13th century outlaw in Sherwood Forest, named Robin Hood.

But, as World Archery President Ugur Erdener was saying last week, they are working hard to modernise, with a more exciting match format, focusing on "shoot-out" and the introduction of music between arrows to such ideas.

As well as a mixed team competition, although every sport is doing that... It is hoped, however, that mixed team archery could feature soon at an Olympic Games, maybe in time for Tokyo 2020.

16:52
The standard is extremely high in this archery final and, even though, it seems to require only a minuscule difference to shoot a 10 or a much lower score, nine and 10s are the order of the day.

Anything less, and you risk slipping behind, as Li Jiamen of China finds out to her cost with a stray six.

16:40 A couple of boxing results to bring you now as Great Britain's Muhammad Ali and Hungary's Richard Konnyu secure bronze medals in the men's flyweight and men's lightweight division, respectively.

16:32 Back to the archery and Jiaman Li of China and France's Melanie Gaubil are battling for gold in the women's recurve final after wins over Brazil's Ana Machado and South Korea's Eun Gyeong Lee respectively.

Eun Gyeong Lee bounced back from her loss to take bronze with a 7-1 victory over the Brazilian while the final is all square at two apiece.

16:24 What better way to celebrate your progress into the semi-finals than with a much needed soak on this horribly humid Chinese afternoon. Such are the thoughts of Finland's Santeri Siren and Miro Maattanen anyway, it seems...

16:19 We're also back underway in the handball with Norway leading Qatar 19-13 in the men's bronze medal match.

16:16 Hockey5s action is now underway at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Sports Park where Germany are two goals to the good against Bangladesh in the men's 9-10 placed classification match.

16:10 Following this morning's Greco-Roman wrestling contests, the competitors in this evening's gold medal finals have now become clear.

North Korea's Seung Ri will go head to head with Fatih Aslan in the men's 42kg contest, while Jabbar Najafov of Azerbaijan will battle for gold with Ilkhom Bakhromov of Uzbekistan in the 50kg contest.

The 58kg final will see Zaven Mikaelyan of Armenia face off Russia'a Arslan Zubairov with the competitors for both the 69kg and 85kg division yet to be decided.

16:04 We're coming towards the business end of the women's recurve competition and French archer Melanie Gaubil has booked her place in the final with a 6-4 win over South Korea's Eun Gyeong Lee.

The second semi-final is on now with China's Jiaman Li currently 4-2 up against Brazil's Ana Machado.

15:57 Staying with beach volleyball and the Finnish pairing of Santeri Siren and Miro Maattanen have just recorded a 2-1 victory over Uruguay's Mauricio Sebastian Vieyto Acosta and Marco Cairus Lucarelli in the first of the four men's quarter-finals.

15:50 Canadian twins, Megan and Nicole McNamara, have secured their come-from-behind victory over American's Zana Muno and Skylar Caputo, after losing the first set, the duo battled back to take the second 21-18 and the decider 15-8.

Next on the sand is Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Ana Patricia Silva Ramos of Brazil against Argentina's Camila Hiruela Tapia and Irene Verasio in the second quarter-final.

15:43 All of the women's boxing bronze medal matches have come to an end now with wins for Alua Balkibekova of Kazakhstan, Neriman Istik of Turkey, Monica Floridia of Italy, Agnes Alsiusson of Sweden, Davina Michel of France and Caitlin Parker of Australia.

Next up we have the men's fifth place playoffs and bronze medal matches...

15:32 We are underway in the first of the beach volleyball quarter-finals. Zana Muno and Skylar Caputo of the US are up against Canadian twins, Megan and Nicole McNamara.

The US pair won the first set 21-14, but the twins have just taken the second 21-18. We are into a decider...

15:28 Hockey 5's action will be getting underway in half and hour or so. It will be classification matches first before the two semi-final clashes from 18:00: Spain v Canada followed by Australia against South Africa.

15:12 I'll tell you someone who must be rather warm... Our friend Mr (or Mrs) Nanjinglele. Here it is having a spot of fun on a segway...

Nanjinlele outside the Media Centre ©ITG

15:02 Neriman Istik of Turkey defeats Anush Grigoryan of Amenia to win the first, in the girl's under 51kg division, and then  Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden beats another Turk, Esra Yildiz, in the under 60kg event...

Mixed fortunes for Turkey then so far.

It is just bronze medals today in boxing, with the finals then to come over the next two days.

14:52 Boxing bronze medal matches have been taking place in boxing. It is an unusual format here because in most amateur boxing competitions, two bronze medals are awarded. But given the small number of rounds, there is only one available here.

14:40 It is very hot today here, as we take a few moments to take in the heat during a relative lull in the action. It says 33'C but the humidity make it feels an awful lot hotter than that, especially when you are sporting our black, insidethegames branded, polo shirts.

14:26 Sweden have taken the bronze medal in girl's handball with a 23-16 victory over Brazil, avenging well their defeat to South Korea yesterday. The second semi-final will be up soon.

14:20 And look who was at the wrestling this morning...

14:16 The morning programme is over in Greco Roman wrestling but we have medal matches to come later on.

14:05 Back in the bronze match, and it's quite nice to be able to focus on one sport for the time being, Sweden are 14-8 in front of Brazil. The Swedes were so close to the final, losing by one point to South Korea, and they seem a little sharper at the moment.

But as we saw yesterday, Brazil are a physical team and they don't back down easily. The South American nation have played in the last four Olympic Games in women's handball. They came eighth in Sydney, seventh in Athens, ninth in Beijing and sixth in London.

They will be hoping for a sniff of a medal on home turf in two years time, and it will be interesting to see how many of today's team will feature there.

13:52 It will be Slovenia against Egypt later on in the boy's final, the only two unbeaten teams in the competition. Egypt have had a good Games here in Nanjing and are also the defending champions.

South Korea will also face Russia in the girl's final.

Slovenia celebrate reaching the handball final ©IHF

13:40 This handball match is the only sport currently taking place in Nanjing as the last of the golfers wrap up their rounds.

Sweden lead 11-5 at the break and look set to take the bronze medal.

13:25 The same can't be said about the JSC Gymnasium where Brazil and Sweden have just taken to the court for the women's bronze medal final.

Their match follows that of the men's 5-6 placed playoff where Brazil triumphed over Tunisia by 28 goals to 27.

13:21 Wresting has drawn to an end with a whopping 49 matches taking place already today. More bouts are set to follow at 17:00 this evening but for now there is quiet over at the Longjiang Gymnasium.

13:04 It's a big day for 3x3 basketball today as we finally move into the knockout phase of competition.

Lithuania have been the dominant force in the men's contest, winning all eight of their Pool A fixtures. Argentina led the way in Pool B as they recorded seven wins and a single defeat to end top of that group.

On the women's side, the Unites States have been on absolute dynamite form, winning all their games before the final buzzer by reaching the 21 point mark. The girls topped Pool B with nine wins out of nine while The Netherlands and Hungary recorded a 8-1 win to loss ratio to top Pool A.

Reunited after 12 years...

12:50
It's the Youth Olympic Games equivalent of the notebook, well kind of... Two play mates from Singapore have met here in Nanjing after 12 years of no contact.

"Ava Lorein Verdeflor of the Philipines and Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore grew up as neighbours in Singapore, but when Verdeflor was three years old, her family moved. The 15-year-old artistic gymnast now lives in a suburb of Dallas, Texas in the United States. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Veloso still lives in Singapore where she qualified for these Games in shooting.

"And while their meeting in Nanjing was not completely serendipitous – the families had kept in touch and knew both girls had qualified for the Games – it was not entirely expected when they did see one another again.

"'I think I saw her [one day] but I wasn't really sure it was her and I would feel embarrassed if I approached the wrong person,' Veloso said. 'At the same time, Ava and her mum came to my apartment twice to see whether I was around but I wasn't at the times they visited. Until one day we met in the dining hall, by coincidence.'

"Verdeflor said she had been excited to reconnect with a girl who had once been a play mate of hers, but at the same time, it was like meeting a whole new person. After all, there is a huge difference between toddlers and teenagers. 'I was really excited to see her but obviously I didn't know what to expect,' Verdeflor said. 'I mean, we were three years old when I last saw her, so I don't remember much.'

"But the talk was not a nervous one, Verdeflor said. She described it as 'awesome' to be reunited with an old friend.

"The girls' conversation was predominantly about current events rather than their Singapore days. Verdeflor congratulated Veloso on the silver medal she won in the women's 10m air rifle competition and Veloso wished Verdeflor luck in her events.

"'We were just talking about the last time [we were together] and whether either of us could remember anything,' Veloso said. 'But unfortunately we couldn't.'

"The two girls did, however, remember a photo that Verdeflor's mother had taken of them when they were young – which they recreated here in Nanjing. Veloso even recreated the same big smile she had in the original.  'This isn't something you see every day and it's really cool,' Veloso said. 'Furthermore, one of the Olympic values is friendship and this is what friendship really means.'

Quote marks"It is an amazing feeling to win silver, I am so happy. It was the hottest conditions I have ever run in but well worth it obviously. My fencing was really good and it went really well. I had loads of confidence from the first fence and that helped me the second time again. Winning the medal has given me loads of experience for the future and who knows, maybe Rio next, we will see."
- Great Britain's Francesca Summers reflects on her silver in the modern pentathlon.

12:28 We're not seeing the tantalisingly high scores we saw yesterday in the golf with Denmark's John Paul Pultz Pinnerup Axelsen and Emily Kristine Pedersen still holding a strong lead at seven under par.

Yesterday's leaders Lee and Youm have entered the clubhouse on one under par after shooting a 71 today. Italy's Renato Paratore, who won the men's individual competition, and partner Virginia Elena Carta ended on even par after a 10 under 66 yesterday.

It looks like the Danes are set to enter the first round as our leaders with a combined score of 14 under par. They still have two holes to play, however.

12:09 Australia's Brett Coletta and Elizabeth Elmassian had a great start to the mixed teams golf contest yesterday after finishing just two strokes down on South Korea's Soyoung Lee and Eun Ho Youm.

The pair are one under through 10 holes in today's play as they look to put pressure on the leaders...

Early morning medals for France

11:56 It's been a good day already for France as they shared in some early morning medal success with Yanis Esmeralda David taking gold in the women's triple jump and Victor Coroller sealing bronze in the men's 400m hurdles.

11:50 The handball golf and wrestling are the only three sports in the spotlight at the minute with archery, athletics and diving all taking a break.

Shengping Wu retained her form to finish as the top qualifier in the women's 3m springboard with a change in positions for Mexico's Alejandra Orozco Loza and Malaysia's Zhiayi Lo as the Mexican moves into second.

A lot of action is taking place in the wrestling with a whole Greco-Roman programme to get through today.

11:45 Brazil are leading Tunisia 13-12 in the second leg of 5-6 place playoff of the men's handball. The Brazilians won the first leg 38-31 and look on course to claim fifth in that contest.

The earlier women's match saw China and Angola tie 22 apiece. The result means Angola claim fifth in that competition after dominating the opening leg.

11:40 Denmark's John Paul Pultz Pinnerup Axelsen and Emily Kristine Pedersen are flying in the mixed team golf. The duo carded a 65, seven under par yesterday and have already hit the mark today after just 11 holes. Taiwan's Chun-An Yu and Ssu-Chia Cheng are their closest competitors and sit five strokes behind on two under for the day.

11:30 We're coming to the closing stages of he women's 3m springboard qualifier where a few familiar faces are dominating proceedings.

China's Shengping Wu, winner of the 10m platform, leads the way with a score of 109.85 after eight dives. She's followed by Malaysia's Zhiayi Loh and Mexico's Alejandra Orozco Loza who came second and third respectively in the 10m platform...

11:20 The final two archery contests have concluded over at the Fangshan Archery Field with Poland's Sylwia Zyzanska and Brazil's Ana Machado the final competitors to progress to the quarter-final stage.

11:13 Now this is pretty awesome. IOC Young Reporters here in Nanjing have been toying with Google Glass over the past week or so. The equipment, which looks like a pair of ordinary glasses, allows you to record what's happening from your own point of view using some high tech gadgetry, I believe... I went to try them out last week but, with so many things in my life, they broke as soon as I got my hands on them...

Here's a video of some beach volleyball players in action, wearing the clever piece of kit. Enjoy...

Nanjing 2014 gold medal11:04 And it's gold for China. Zhihang Xu crosses the line in a personal best 50.61 to seal the win, but only just. It takes a photo finish to determine Xu the victor as Tunisia's Mohamed Fares Jlassi puts in a brilliant performance to match the Chinese runners time.

That run is nearly a second quicker than Jlassi's previous personal best!

In third is Victor Coroller.

10:58 There could be more medals for the hosts over at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre as the men line up for the 400m final.

Zhihang Xu was fastest in qualifying and looks good to add a 32nd gold for China. He'll face stiff opposition from Thailand's Witthawat Thumcha, France's Victor Coroller and Brazil's Mikael Antonio De Jesus, however.

10:55 France's Melanie Gaubil, Spain's Alicia Marin, China's Jiaman Li and Japan's Miasa Koike have all progressed to the quarter-finals of the women's recurve competition over at the Fangshan Archery Field.

And it looks like a a familiar face has joined them to celebrate...

10:50 An update from the International Hockey Federation now following an exciting day of women's hockey5s yesterday. Today brings more men's action with finals set to take place over the next two days.

Quote marks"Two top class semi-finals in the women's competition today designated the Netherlands and China the 2014 Youth Olympic Games finalists.

"In a semi-final that was another instance of the defining women's rivalry in the last few years, the Netherlands took on Argentina. The Leoncitas scored first, but saw the tables turned midway through the match, and while Argentina succeeded in levelling the scores again, another Dutch double hit eventually finalized the ticket into the final for the Oranje ladies.

"Hosts China and Japan locked horns over the other place in the big final, in a match that kept spectators in the packed stadium on the edge of their seats. The game seesawed back and forth, and neither team was ever able to build a comfortable lead. A pair of goals from Zhang Jinrong midway through the match gave China the lead for the first time, and turned out to be the decider at the end of the day despite the Japanese women's best efforts.

"The crossovers for fifth to eighth place saw Uruguay defeat Germany and New Zealand subdue South Africa.

"In the match for 9th place, Zambia was stronger than Fiji today, claiming victory in the two teams' last appearance on the fields of the Olympic Sports Park."

Nanjing 2014 gold medal10:25 And it's the Kokeb Tesfaye Alemu who takes the gold! The Ethiopian must have been toying with the athletes in qualifying as she runs a 4:15.38 to take the win. That's six seconds quicker than her previous time.

Kenya's Winfred Mbithe is two seconds behind in second while Dalila Gosa of Bahrain knocks three second off her personal best to take the bronze.

10:20 With the end of the triple jump comes the start of the women's 1500m final.

Ethiopia's Kokeb Tesfaye Alemu was fastest in qualifying and will be favourite for gold here. That's not to rule out Kenya's Winfred Mbithe or Germany's Konstanze Klosterhalfen who will also no doubt be in with a shot for gold.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal10:15 Three personal bests brought an end to the women's triple jump as France's Yanis Esmeralda David seals the gold.

The French jumper added 27cm to her qualification jump to take the gold in a distance of 13.33m.

Australia's Tay-Leiha Clark also jumped a personal best 13.06m to secure silver with a PB for Hungary's Eszter Bajnok bringing her bronze.

10:05 Sailors will have welcomed a steady breeze yesterday as they were able to complete the medal races of all four sailing contests following delays caused by lack of (or in one case too much) wind.

Here's a round up of all the action, brought to you by ISAF...

Quote marks"Bernie Chin and Samantha Yom made it double gold for Singapore as they took the Boy's and Girl's Byte CII Youth Olympic Games titles in Nanjing, China.

"Chin held on to his overnight lead whilst Yom advanced from second to first in a gripping final day of the Youth Olympic sailing competition.

"The Byte CII fleets raced in a steady 4-5 knot breeze that was coming from an easterly direction and the tension was high in both races.

"Rodolfo Pires of Portugal and Jonatan Vadnai of Hungary took silver and bronze in the Boy's Byte CII whilst the female silver went to Odile van Aanholt of The Netherlands and bronze to Jarian Brandes of Peru.

"Argentina's Francisco Saubidet Birkner and China's Linli Wu claimed the Boy's and Girl's Techno 293 honours as sailing concluded at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China.

"A single undiscardable race brought the Techno 293 racing to a close with the conditions testing the 20 boy's and 21 girl's racers who took to the course. Three knots gusting up to eight knots from an easterly direction made life tough on the race course with those with excellent tactical nous and light wind prowess excelling."

09:58 B Finals in the men's and women's 2,000m steeplechase, as well as the women's javelin throw, have come to and end with wins for Sudan's Hossny Eisa, Syria's Fatima Raya and Serbia's Atina Kamasi.

09:53 Archers have taken to the field over at the Fangshan Archery Field as the women's recurve round of 16 competition gets underway. Wins for South Korea's Eun Gyeong Lee and Yasemin Ecem Anagoz of Turkey have seen them progress to the quarter-finals already this morning.

The two will now play each other in that quarter-final stage from 15:00, with finals set to begin at around 16:26.

09:45 The United States' Noah Lyles won a superb gold in the men's 200m final last night, beating Jamaica's Chad Walker, who was later disqualified, and Botswana's Baboloki Thebe to the line.

It turns out, the young sprinter joined team mate and women's 200m bronze medallist Brandee Johnson the night before the race in practicing their starts and imagining what it would be like to win a medal on the world stage.

Quote marks"We were both down on the floor in our starting positions – just the two of us – and we imagined the gun going off," said Johnson. "We envisioned the whole race. And now that it's happened, I still can't believe it. It feels like I'm dreaming."

"It feels amazing to know that we can represent our country in the same event and come out with the gold and the bronze. I was so excited to run, but being able to come out here and win gold on this stage is just amazing. There are not enough words to explain the emotion that I'm feeling right now."

09:38 The first handball match of the day has hosts China up against Angola in the second leg of the women's 5-6th place playoff. Angola won the first leg 31-18 and look on course to grab fifth place in this contest as they leg 11-9 in the second. It'll take something special for the hosts to pull this one back...

09:33 The first gold medal contest of the day will begin in a couple of minutes as women's long jumpers get set to take to the field. France's Yanis Esmeralda David led the way in qualifying after a jump of 13.06m. Australia's Tay-Leiha Clark was the only other athlete to break the 13.00m mark as she jumped the distance exactly in a personal best distance.

09:26 We're underway in three sports already this morning with athletes from the mixed golf competition, handball and athletics already taking centre stage.

The South Korean pairing of Soyoung Lee, winner of the women's individual strokeplay contest, and Eun Ho Youm led the way in round one of the golf yesterday. The duo currently sit on even par after two holes of the second round with pairs from The Netherlands and Denmark making early headway in today's play as they sit one under par.

09:19 Russia's Seda Tutkhalyan finished second in the women's floor exercise competition last night, adding silver to the all-around gold and uneven bars gold she had already picked up during these Games.

This incredible photo gives some insight into the precision and grace of the young Russian as she performs one of many tricks on the mat of the Nanjing Olympic Spots Centre Gymnasium. The girl is only 15, remember...

09:11 Speaking of the wrestling, here's what the governing body of the sport (FILA) have had to say about its long awaited appearance...

Quote marks"Wrestlers from across six continents have gathered this week in eastern China to kickoff the wrestling programme of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games.

"The tournament, highlighted by an impressive six cadet world champions, will be competed in men's freestyle, female wrestling and Greco-Roman and includes a total of 111 wrestlers from 46 countries.

"'We are excited to have our young athletes participate in the Youth Olympic Games,' said FILA president Nenad Lalovic. 'The YOG is an important way to introduce our young athletes to the ideals of the Olympic Games and we hope that our wrestlers enjoy the competition and their first Olympic experience.'

"On the mat, the YOG wrestling event will feature more than a dozen medalists from the 2014 FILA Cadet Wrestling World Championships held last month in Humenne, Slovakia.

"Russia's Arslan Zubairov highlights the Greco-Roman portion of the competition as he looks to defend his 58kg cadet world title Monday in Nanjing. Bronze medalist Dadov Islambek of Azerbaijan will be competing at 69kg along with Robert Manville of the United States who won a cadet world title in freestyle, but is competing in Greco-Roman.

"The female wrestling competition will have a trio of Cadet world title holders hoping to stake their claim to a golden YOG. Two-time cadet champion Olena Kremzer of Ukraine will look to defend against a packed field at 52kg, including cadet world silver medalist Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan. Grace Jacob Bullen of Norway will face a similar challenge as she seeks to defend her 60kg her title against world silver medalist Koumba Selene Larroque of France. Germany's Nicole Amann will also want to keep an eye out for familiar opponent Natalia Strzalka of Poland who she bested in the 70kg finals last month.

"Men's freestyle will be lead by the Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan who was brilliant in Slovakia and will wrestle to defend his 63kg gold medal. The freestyle big men are also showing up in force for the Youth Olympic Games, with cadet bronze medalist Dmitri Ceacusta leading the charge at 100kg and Japan's Yajuro Yamasaki of Japan wrestling to improve upon on his 76kg bronze medal performance."

09:06 After the staggering 32 gold medals on offer yesterday, we're down to a slightly more reasonable 20 today with a first taste of medal action from the handball, as well as medals in the athletics (of course), archery and diving.

We're also graced with the presence of a new sport today as wrestling finally makes its much anticipated appearance at these Games. There are five gold medals from the Greco-Roman form of the sport today with freestyle due to start tomorrow.
