22:00 That's it for sporting action then as Brazil fall to a 16-11 defeat to Germany and Czech Republic beat Taiwan 14-12 in the women's 3x3 basketball.

With the end of sport, comes the end of our blog for the evening but of course we can't end without a montage of some of the best pictures from today...

21:45 It's all gone a bit quiet on the sporting front over here with just two 3x3 basketball matches still to play. 

First up is Brazil's encounter with Germany, followed by Taiwan versus Czech Republic.

There is still two full days of preliminary action to come in the 3x3 basketball before knockout action begins on Monday.

Finals will be held on the penultimate day of these Games (Tuesday) with the United States and Lithuanian both looking prolific in the women's and men's contests respectively. 

21:30 Territories in Sub-Saharan Africa will have the opportunity to watch coverage of the action here at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics Games after broadcast agreements were made with 21 territories in the region.

Led by Infront Sports & Media and supported with operations by the French-based sports event and television agency TV Media Sport, the media rights in place secure significant coverage of the event on television screens across the region.

The exposure is a result of Infront's media rights agreement with the International Olympic Committe, which intends to significantly expand the reach of the Olympic events on the African continent. For the current youth event, hundreds of African athletes are participating across the majority of disciplines – underlining the significance of the event for the region.

The programming offered to broadcasters includes a daily thirty minute highlight programme focusing particularly on the African athletes, together with best moments of the day as well as full live coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies. Overall, 222 events across all 28 disciplines will be featured. All programmes are provided with commentary in English, French and Portuguese with broadcasters able to access the feed.

21:12 The men's tennis singles bronze medal match took place early this afternoon with Russia's Andrey Rublev dominating proceedings against Japan's Andrey Yamasaki.

The gold medal final for this contest will take place tomorrow where Poland's Kamil Adrian Majchrzak will take on Brazil's Orlando Moraes Luz.

Other fixtures today saw China's Shilin Xu book a place in the women's singles final where she will face Iryna Shymanovich of Bulgaria.

Russia's Andrey Rublev and Brazil's Orlando Moraes Luz will have two chances to win gold over the coming days with both players also booking places in the men's doubles final.

Rublev will play alongside team mate Karen Khachanov while Moraes Luz competes with compatriot Marcelo Zormann Silva.

20:57 The final handball match of the evening is nearing its end with Slovenia currently leading Qatar 17-10. The Slovenian trounced Tunisia 33-12 in their opening fixture and look on course to record a second win at these Games.

Earlier results saw Russia beat South Korea 36-31 and Sweden beat Brazil 32-24 in the women's contest, with Egypt beat Brazil 29-23 in the men's.

20:45 Unsurprisingly, the Chinese mixed 4x100m medley relay team is receiving a wealth of media attention inside the Nanjing 2014 Olympic Sports Centre Natatorium after their gold medal in the final swimming race of the Youth Olympic Games.

20:40 Action still ongoing in five sports across Nanjing with play in the athletics, beach volleyball, handball, tennis and 3x3 basketball still taking place.

The veteran of the court (he is a year elder than his team mate) proves too strong for his compatriot as he secures the final gold of the evening here in Nanjing.

Bronze was won by Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting after his straight sets victory earlier this evening.

20:15 The final gold medal of the night will come from the badminton courts of the Sport Institute Gymnasium as an all-Chinese affair, surprisingly, pits Yuqi Shi against Guipu Lin.

Shi currently leads by a set to nil.

During the Beijing Games in which he won eight gold medals, Youth Olympic Athlete Ambassador Michael Phelps was rather a popular figure around the host city. And when British BBC reporter Stephen Parry was filming a feature on Phelps in the city centre, he was surrounded upon by a throng of wildly excited local people, all of whom were totally oblivious to his increasingly desperate insistence that his name was 'Steve not Michael'. Ironically, Parry was a former swimmer who had won 200m butterfly bronze four years earlier in Athens, sharing a podium with Phelps."

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:04 The comeback is complete in the women's table tennis singles final as China's Bingjiao He comes from a set down to beat Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 2-1and secure the gold.

The bronze medal goes to Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

19:59 It appears we have a celebrity among the insidethegames team with a certain Nick Butler being compared to the Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper, aka Jim Parsons.

Yes that's right, our 23-year-old reporter was told he looks unmistakably like the 41-year-old American actor with a member of the Chinese press requesting a photograph.

Not one to disappoint the fans, Nick happily obliged.

Maybe I should grab an autograph before his fame becomes too much to be seen with the likes of me...

19:55 That gold medal for China is a tenth in the pool for the hosts with four of these coming in relay events.

The hosts led after two turnovers before Russia stormed into the lead in the third. The Russian's couldn't hold on, however, as China came racing back in the final 100m, eventually taking the win in a time of 3:49.33.

Bronze went to a fast-finishing Australia who recorded a time of 3:52.45.

19:46 Interestingly, athletes of either gender can compete in a particular stroke, meaning that men and women could be battling together in a particular discipline.

Each team can only consist of two men and two women, however.

19:43 Next in the pool we have the final swimming race of the Youth Olympic Games with the mixed 4x100m medley. 

19:36 These Games have focused heavily on international relationships between athletes, with mixed team events a familiar sight across around half the sports.

One such sport was archery, which held a mixed international team event earlier today.

The event saw players from a number of nations join together in this pairs competition with one such team consisting of athletes from Turkey and Israel. The pair won their encounter 5-4 to progress to tomorrow's round of 16

Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:30 Back to the pool and Nikola Obrovac has won gold in the men's 50m breaststroke.

The Croatian records a time of 27.83 to become the Youth Olympic champion, 0.11 ahead of Venezuela's Carlos Claverie.

Russian's Anton Chupkov seals his fourth medal of the Games in third.


Nanjing 2014 gold medal19:26 It's all over in the weightlifting as Russia's Khetag Khugaev lifts his way to gold.

The Russian recorded a clean and jerk high of 191kg to give a total score of 355kg.

That score was an impressive 34kg more than Uzbekistan's Farkhodbek Sobirov in second while Egypt's Mohamed Shosha was a further 3kg back in third.

The success comes through Hannah Moore as she seals victory in the women's 400m freestyle with a time of 4:11.05. 

Thailand's Sarisa Suwannachet takes a surprise silver medal as a great swim sees her finish just 0.18 seconds behind the American.

Bronze goes to Kathrin Demler of Germany is is a further 0.02 seconds back. 

19:13 Athletics action is up and running at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium as qualification continues across a variety of sports.

This evening sees qualification in the men's triple jump, pole vault, javelin, 400m hurdles, 200m and 800m, alongside the women's javelin, triple jump, 400m hurdles, 1500m and 200m.

Qite a look going on then, I suppose...

19:09 There looks to be a special guest at the International Expo Centre as weightlifting's Athlete Role Model and two-time Olympian Kendrick J. Farris talks to young reporters as we wait for the clean and jerk action to begin.

19:05 It's all level in the women's table tennis final as China's Bingjiao He takes the second set to even the scoreline at one apiece. I thought this would be a cracker and it's looking that way at the minute.

19:02 We're coming to the "dough making" end of the weightlifting over at the International Expo Centre with Russia's Khetag Khugaev leading the men's 85kg final following a snatch lift of 164kg.

Uzbekistan's Farkhodbek Sobirov is his closest competitor after a lift of 147kg, however, it will take quite the achievement to knock the Russian off top spot now...

18:59 A touching moment on the medal rostrum in the Natatorium now as Brazil's Matheus Paulo de Santana is overcome with emotion after winning gold in the men's 100m freestyle. 

It's been an emotional Games for the young Brazilian and that gold medal is certainly well earned.

Tamas Kenderesi is the man to take gold as he powers to victory in 1:55.95.

The victory denies a second gold medal for team mate Benjamin Gratz as the 200m individual medley champion settles for silver, almost two seconds behind his compatriot.

There will be a third green, white and red flag flying during the medal ceremony as Italy's Giacomo Carini secures the bronze.

18:42 Japan's Akane Yamaguchi has gone a set up in the women's table tennis singles final.

The 17-year-old battled to a 24-22 first set against China's Bingjiao He.


Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:30 Quite the medal share at the Natatorium this evening with Ukraine the next nation to taste success.

Anastasiya Malyavina is the girl to to take the gold as she wins the women's 200m breaststoke.

The Ukrainian went off like a bullet and was untouchable by the rest of the field as she swims home in 2:26.43.

South Korea's Jiwon Yang did her best to bridge the gap and closed within 0.88 seconds come the final touch.

Anna Sztankovics adds another medal for Hungary as she finishes in third.

Matheus Paulo de Santana takes gold in the men's 100m freestyle.

The 18-year-old, who I'm told by Brazilian reporters is a gem in the pool, has already secured two silver medals at these Games, including one in the shorter 50m freestyle distance, but will make his way to the top step of the podium tonight after a brilliant performance in the pool.

De Santana finishes 0.81 seconds ahead of China's Hexin Yu who, in turn, finishes just 0.01 seconds ahead of Germany's Damian Wierling.

18:18 A slight break in the medals now as IOC member Gunilla Lindberg hands her share of the medals inside the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Natatorium.

That gives us time (just) to look elsewhere for a moment.

Over at the International Expo Centre the men's 85kg weightlifting competition has just got underway.There are only five competitors in this event with Russia's Khetag Khugaev the strong favourite.

There's also gold medal action in the badminton where China's Bingjiao He takes on Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the women's singles final.

That ought to be a tasty affair...

Nanjing 2014 gold medal18:14 Liliana Szilagyi continues her, and Hungary's, brilliant performance at these Games as she adds 100m butterfly gold to the 200m title she won earlier in the week.

The 17-year-old fends off the challenge of China's Yufei Zhang to seal the race in a time of 57.67, 0.28 seconds clear of the Chinese swimmer.

Bronze is collected by Australia's Brianna Throssell, a sixth bronze of the Games for the Aussie.

Guangyuan Li wins his second gold medal of the Games, and third medal in total, as he swims to victory in the men's 200m backstroke final.

His time of 1:56.94 is just fractions of a second quicker than Evgeny Rylov as the Russian is denied a fourth gold medal of the Games.

Bronze is secured by Great Britain's Luke Greenbank.

Second goes to Australia's Ami Matsuo while another Russian, Daria Ustinova, takes bronze.

17:59 First up in the pool is the the women's 50m freestyle. Russia's Rozaliya Nasretdinova was fastest in qualifying...

17:55 It's coming up to that time of day again... five minutes and a hefty nine gold medals will be won in pool... I better put the typing gloves on.

Sailing update

17:48 Sticking with the sailing and China's Linli Wu is perfectly primed to take gold for her nation in the Girl's Techno 293 fleet. The Chinese sailor is seven points clear of Russia's Mariam Sekhposyan and France's Lucia Pianazza and needs to finish seventh or better to claim gold. Wu has yet to finish outside of the top seven and has mastered the light winds of Lake Jinniu so she will be hard to overthrow on the final day.

It is all to play for in the Boy's Techno 293 with eight points separating the top seven. As it stands, Russia's Maxim Tokarev is at the top of the pack on 16 points but that will count for very little on the final day with Argentina's Francisco Saubidet Birkner a point behind and Dutch sailor Lars van Someren on 19 points.

Four points separates the leaders and second place in the Boy's and Girl's Byte CII. Odile van Aanholt tops the pack in the girl's whilst Bernie Chin sits in the medal position in the boy's fleet.

The Dutch sailor leads Singapore's Samantha Yom who has worked her way up the field following a 21st in Race 4. Van Aanholt and Yom have a considerable advantage at the top of the Girl's Byte CII leader board with Italy's Carolina Albano 23 points off Van Aanholt in third.

In the Boy's Byte CII, Chin took the lead from Pedro Correa after a solid third day of racing that saw him take a 1-5-3, the best performance of the day. Going into the last race Chin, on 33 points, has a slender lead over Correa who has 37.

Nine points splits third to ninth with Rodolfo Pires, Apiwat Sringam, Pavle Zivanovic, Alastair Gifford, Jonatan Vadnai, Justin Vittecoq, and Henry Marshall all in with a shout of at least bronze.

17:43 Another day of sailing abandonment today with no races taking to the waters.

A non discardable, single race for all fleets will, therefore, bring the Youth Olympic Games Sailing Competition to a close with gold, silver and bronze to be decided in the girl's and boy's Byte CII and Techno 293.

The decision to abandon the day of racing was made at 16:30 local time with the breeze on Lake Jinniu not materialising for the second consecutive day. Reports vary for the final day of the competition with some predicting 1-2 knots and others saying 3-6 knots. It will be a case of wait and see on the final day.

If racing does not go ahead then Sunday, can be used to complete the competition.

With sailors unable to lose the final race result the stakes and pressure will be high on the final day with those gunning for the medals aiming for good night of refuelling, rest, recuperation and sleep.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal17:32 And mixed badminton gold goes to June Wei Cheam of Malaysia and Tsz Yau Ng of Hong Kong!

The duo came through a tense second set to secure a 21-14, 23-21 victory over Taiwan's Chia-Hsin Lee and Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama. 

The bronze was collected by Andraz Krapez of Slovenia and Alida Chen of The Netherlands in an earlier fixture.

17:23 Mixed international team archery has come to an end for the day with 16 matches in action on the first day of elimination play.

The competition will return on Sunday with the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals all set to take place.

17:10 We've got gold medal action in the mixed doubles badminton competition where June Wei Cheam of Malaysia and Tsz Yau Ng of Hong Kong are a set up against Taiwan's Chia-Hsin Lee and Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama. 

The men's and women's singles matches will follow with three Chinese players contesting those finals...

17:02 Handball action is ongoing at Jiangning Sports Centre Gymnasium with Sweden currently leading Brazil 16-11 in the their women's preliminary group B match.

The earlier fixture saw Russia's women edge to a 36-31 victory over South Korea.

16:51 China will have a representative in the women's singles tennis final after Shilin Xu beats Akvile Parazinskaite of Lithuania in their semi-final encounter.

Xu will face either Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine or Iryna Shymanovich of Bulgaria in the final, with the duo on court as I type. The Ukrainian is one set to the good.

The final will take place on Sunday.

It's Thailand's Duanganksorn Chaidee who takes it as she back up a 106kg snatch with a 138kg lift in the clean and jerk.

Russia's Svetlana Shcherbakova overhauls Tatyana Kapustina of Kazakhstan to take silver with a total lift of 228kg. The Russian and Kazakh's total scores were identical, however, Scherbakova moves ahead due to her lower body weight.

New Zealand upset Chinese stranglehold on trampoline

Nanjing 2014 gold medal16:11 Gold for New Zealand's Dylan Schmidt in the boy's trampoline gymnastics event. His total of 57.340 edges Liu Changxin into second place.

Bronze goes to Portugal's Pedro Ribeiro Ferreira.

16:05 Apologies, we have been a little slack on our trampolining updates due to the press-conference-shaped distraction. Liu Changxin of China led after qualifying, but Dylan Schmidt of New Zealand has gone ahead in the final.

Both are awarded the same execution mark but the Kiwi had the higher difficulty. 

16:02 A bronze medal to update from the badminton. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia takes it in the boy's singles with a third place playoff win over Aditya Joshi of India.

The two singles and mixed doubles finals begin at 17:00.

15:54 Underway in the girl's over 63kg weightlifting competition, the final event of the Games for female lifters. Tatyana Kapustina of Kazakhstan snatches 105kg, but then Duanganksorn Chaidee of Thailand goes one kilogram better with 106kg.

Thailand are having a great Games so far...

15:46 Although it was a Colombian gold medal in the team event, it was South African Ivan Venter who won the road race earlier on...He is a member of the Potchefstroom-based World Cycling Centre Africa.

Mid Games Press Conference

15:20 The final question concerned whether Nanjing 2014 has been an improvement on Singapore 2010. It came from a Brazilian journalist.

"Are you not going to ask me about Rio 2016?" asks Felli. He has spent a lot of time there this year since the IOC decided he was going to play a special role overseeing preparations back in April...

But back to the Youth Olympics and Felli speaks admirably about preparations for both Games, but does add that they "want to be able to go to places that are not as sophisticated as China," as well in the future - an interesting addition to the debate on whether the Youth Olympics has moved beyond what it was originally envisaged as.

15:10 A final barrage of questions to Yang Yang to wrap up proceedings. She speaks about the friendliness of the Nanjing citizens, and is promptly asked, by that well known journalist Gilbert Felli, "are they more friendly here than in Beijing or Shanghai?" 

"People are friendly everywhere in China," she replies. I'm pretty sure I detected a look of slight panic on the face of Mark Adams after that off-piste question.

14:56 Lots more questions now, with the IOC Young Reporters Programme and the various Culture and Education Programme aspects coming up.

Mark Adams has also highlighted the popularity of Nanjing 2014 on social media. "Our call for selfies at the Opening Ceremony reached about 400 million people on Weibo," he claims.

14:41: Our discussion (scroll down to 12:19) on whether they should be a medals table at the Youth Olympics has been raised...

"We leave that to you in the media," quips Felli, who I think may have been spending a little too much time with IOC President Thomas Bach. He is full of jokes today...

He adds: "But the Olympic Charter says the Games are not a competition between countries so we are leaving it that way, the Olympics and the Youth Olympics".

14:33 Another message, from Gilbert Felli, about the flexibility of the sports programme, which is clearly a key point of Olympic Agenda 2020 that the IOC are trying to drive across.

"People think you are either in the Olympic programme or you are not," says Felli. "But even if you are not, IOC would like to support you. That is our message."

14:25 Kit McConnell speaks about the success of the Sports Lab. He outlines how it "embodies the spirit of the Youth Olympics" and is about engaging with all sorts of people.

He is asked what factors will be used to assess the success of each of the four sports being showcased? How many people were there and the reaction of those people, is the answer.

14:16 We have had some updates about everything Nanjing 2014 related by each member of the panel so far. From the IF standpoint, Baumann is delighted and highlights the importance of innovations for the Youth Olympics.

He claims that every sport has innovated, but, of course, his has the most. "That is my very partisan view," he adds.

The greater depth in the 3x3 basketball competition is another pleasing aspect, with Andorra's narrow defeat to Spain, and Venezuela's victory over Russia two such examples.

Canadian flag13:37 In the modern pentathlon earlier, Kali Frances Sayers of Canada won the fencing with a strong total of 282 points. Zhong Xiuting and Francesca Summers, of China and Britain, were second and third. 

Unlike at the Olympics, the action is not taking place solely over one day here in Nanjing, with the fencing the only of the five disciplines being showcased today.

13:28 On the one hand it feel that these Games have been going on for months, and on the other it feels like they have hardly started. But we are actually coming up to the halfway point and we have a mid-Games press conference to attend in 20 minutes time.

Not sure of the exact speakers yet but we are not expecting IOC chief Thomas Bach to be one of them. 

13:19 A second bronze medal to report in badminton. Andraz Krapez of Slovenia and Alida Chen of The Netherlands win the third place play off in the mixed team doubles event.

The duo finished well down the field in the road race but it was their strong cross-country performances which earned them their victory. Denmark win another cycling minor medal, silver this time, while The Netherlands claim bronze.

12:19 Another heated debate ongoing in the Media Centre now, we've had a couple this morning. Should there be a Youth Olympic medals table? We have one here at insidethegames (scroll down to 10:44) but there is no official one, unlike at the Summer or Winter Olympics.

The IOC think not, because these Games are not a competition between countries but a sign of unity and togetherness. But, on the other hand they are a sporting competition and it is natural from a purely logistical perspective to wonder how your country is doing...

It all related to the ambiguity at the heart of the Youth Olympics as to what they really represent. Culture and education? Or sport?

Quote marks"Twelve races will be held in sailing today as organisers have been forced to reshuffle the competition schedule after a combination of light winds and inclement weather on the first three days.

Organisers had planned to use yesterday's reserve day to do some catch-up racing, but this has now been added to today's schedule. The men's and women's Techno 293 windsurfers have completed six races so far, while the Byte CII one person dinghy classes have raced seven times each.

Three races in each competition are now scheduled but Race 10 in each of the men's and women's Techno 293 event have been cancelled.

This Race Committee has advised that today and tomorrow are both scheduled racing days and Sunday is a reserve day, and because six opening series races have been completed, final races will be sailed tomorrow even if the opening series is not been completed.

According to an official communication issued yesterday, if any of the final races are not sailed tomorrow then the reserve day (Sunday 24) will be used to complete the final races. If there is no racing on Sunday, then medals will be awarded based on the results of the opening series."

11:51 Staying with target sports, it is rifle shooting today in mixed team action. The bronze medal match is going on at the moment, with Viktoriya Sukhorukova and Lu Shao-Chuan, of Ukraine and Taiwan, closing in on victory over opponents from San Marino and Serbia. 

It's Argentina and Mexico versus Egypt and Hungary for gold, up next.

South Korea on target in archery

11:40 Lee Woo Seok of South Korea leads the way in boy's archery qualifying. He scores 704 points with 57 perfect 10's! Atul Verma of India is 16 points behind in second place.

In the girl's event, our leader is another South Korea, Lee Eun Gyeong, who shoots 681 to lead Diananda Choirunisa of Indonesia and Li Jiamen of China. 

The elimination matches will not begin until Monday (August 25) but before then we have three days of mixed team action, starting this afternoon.

11:24 I've just joined by my colleague Paul, who reports that is is hotter than ever outside. He has rather intelligently decided to wear shorts today as well, which is a clever move I feel. 

Some interesting discussion in the Media Centre going on about the profile of IOC members at Olympic events. Some feel that they are considered too much as "celebrities" and much could be learned from the lower-profile approach of officials at the Commonwealth Games.

"Why don't they get athletes presenting more medals rather than IOC members," a certain historian-turned-journalist who will remain unnamed proclaimed. "I submitted this as my Olympic Agenda 2020 proposal. At the Commonwealth Games it was great, because they had all sorts of people presenting."

The choice of Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry, albeit an athlete but in the sport of swimming, to present the boy's table tennis medals is one such appointment that raised eyebrows...
Oversleeping in shooting

11:12 We've spoken a lot about the camaraderie in these mixed team events. But yesterday in the shooting, there was also a few teething problems after Ukrainian shooter Polina Konarieva overslept and consequently missed the critical round of the 10m air pistol event, costing team mate Ion Aric of Moldova a shot at a medal...

Konarieva reached the venue but competition had already begun. She was present at the shooting hall when the medals were awarded later in the day.

"I don't know what to say to him," she said, referring to Aric, who was inconsolable as he left the venue before the finals.

Aric later admitted: "Yes, there was a lot of emotion ... I did not know how to feel. Why she was late, I don't know why ... she is not responsible for her action. I'm a little angry".

The Ukrainian's coach, Alexander Kaminskyy explained why she didn't reach the venue on time for the start of the competition. "She was sleeping and woke up at 8 o'clock and went to the station to get a taxi. The driver didn't know the road but he said, 'Ok, I know, shooting range ... no problem'." 

"I think it is my mistake," the coach added.

ISSF technical delegate Jorg Brokamp blamed carelessness for the error. "It's not the fault of the shooter but the fault of the team manager and coach," he said. "That's the first duty that a coach and manager you have to prepare your athletes schedule and get all necessary information." 

A valuable lesson anyway, for all concerned.

10:56 One country that was confusing us a little in terms of medals was Bulgaria. They have won gold in weightlifting and silver in judo, but we also though they had a second gold, which they have, but in the mixed team shooting event. 

Lydia Nencheva teamed with Uzbekistan's Vladimir Svechnikov to win the pistol event. Here is a letter of congratulation from Bulgarian Olympic Committee President Stefka Marinova.

Medals, medals and more medals

10:44 The notable absentee in the top 20 is Germany. They have taken 11 medals but only one of them has been golden, and they are consequently down in 21st position. For the record, that was won by single scull rower Tim Ole Naske. 

As well as Egypt, nations to win their first gold medal yesterday also included Armenia and Spain. 

10:38 We have just been rectifying a few teething problems with our medals table but here it is. This is the top 20, coincidentally that includes every nation that has won two or more golds. The full table can be found here.

We haven't included any of the mixed team competitions in there yet, in order to avoid confusion, so although 50 nations are in our table, quite a few others have also enjoyed podium positions.

China are now stretching their lead at the top, with Russia comfortable in second and Italy consolidating their grip on third following the cycling. A good jump up by France with their rugby, slam dunking and taekwondo success, and Europe, with six nations in the top 10, are showing their strength. 

But Asia are also doing well with six countries in the top 20, and North America, South America, Africa and Oceania all have representation in that top 20, courtesy of the US, Brazil, Egypt and Australia.

10:30 There is no action, incidentally, in either hockey 5s or football today, with a much-needed rest day in those two sports, while taekwondo, judo and triathlon all finished yesterday.

But there's heats going on swimming, team action in table tennis, and the boy's road race in cycling. The latest mixed team shooting event will also be underway soon.

Ana Paula Casetta of Brazil wins the girl's road race, crossing the line first in 1:12.36 in a mass bunch sprint. She finishes ahead of Ema Manikaite of Lithuania and Sofia Beggin of Italy, with 31 of the 55 finishes involved in that sprint. 

10:11 The ranking round is underway in the archery individual competitions, where the Olympic-style recurve bow is being used. There is also a mixed team competition to come.

In modern pentathlon, meanwhile, the fencing is the first of the five events to be held. It is just beginning now...

10:06 It's the final day of beach volleyball pool-stage action today, and we have already seen wins for Uruguay, Oman, Switzerland and the United States. 

Oman flagWe haven't mentioned Oman much in any sport so far, but Ahid Khalid Hashil Al Sahi and S.S.S.Z. Al Hammadi have defeated Rodell Fraser and Delshun Welcome of St Vincent and the Grenadines in a 47-minute clash, 21-15, 18-21, 16-14.

That is their first win of the competition. And I also see that today is Al Sahi's 18th birthday!

Chinese opportunity in cycling?

09:54 Some interesting words by International Cycling Union chief Brian Cookson, who was here earlier in the week, about whether China could rival the likes of his native Great Britain in the future. With the right structure and support, he believes so...

The Briton also pointed to Ji Cheng, who earlier this year became the first Chinese cyclist to race in, and complete, the Tour de France, as an example of this potential.

09:47 To be perfectly honest, we are struggling to get any updates from the Laoshan Road Cycling Course at the moment, but the girl's event is in progress. We will bring you an update as soon as we hear one. 
09:41 A reminder of the particularly innovative cycling format here in Nanjing, with only three gold medals being distributed: team boys, team girls and a mixed team relay event.

Both the boys and girls events, that will conclude today, have two athletes per nation. Each of the athletes has competed in at least two of the four races to have been held so far - BMX, road time trial, an Olympic-style cross country race, and a cross country elimination event. Every competitor will then compete in today's road races with the results of all races combined to determine the winner.

With just the road race to come, Denmark are top of the overall girl's standing, but Czech Republic have won the two cross country races, the two mountain biking events they have participated in. The question is, will they able to transcend that form onto the road?

Colombia lead from The Netherlands, Denmark and Mexico on the boy's side.

09:34 From our perspective the weather is a lot of hotter and muggier again today. The ten minute walk from the East Gate, where the subway station is, to the North Gate, where the Media Centre is located, was enough to bring on a hefty sweat.

I cannot imaging how tough it will for the girl's cyclists out there on the roads of Nanjing this morning, although, that said, the last cycling road race I watched was in Glasgow on a final day of torrential rain at the Commonwealth Games.

I would probably take the humidity over the downpours, but only just...

09:25 Racing is scheduled to resume at 11:00 today three races scheduled across all four fleets. But all ready the Nanjing 2014 website is showing the dreaded "rescheduled" and "cancellation" icon next to every race. No official confirmation yet...

09:18 That said, as far as the sailing is concerned, we are very dependent on the weather as to how much action we will get today. Lake Jinniu was plagued with little to no wind yesterday with no racing possible.

With light winds forecasted ahead of the day the hard working race committee were always facing an uphill battle and a long wait on the water for anything to materialise. With the wind not playing ball the decision to cancel the day was made at 13:15.

The leader boards from the day prior remain the same with China's Linli Wu topping the billing in the girl's Techno 293 with Russia's Maxim Tokarev atop of the pack in the boy's division.

In the boy's Byte CII fleet Bernie Chin has a narrow advantage over Brazil's Pedro Correa with Odile Van Aanholt  of The Netherlands still in control in the girl's Byte CII.

09:10 Another 18 gold medals are being won today, with exactly half of them taking place on the final day of action in the pool.

We will also see the first medals action in badminton and cycling - which is first up today - as well as more in shooting, trampoline gymnastics and weightlifting.

Away from the medals it is actually a slightly quieter day today, with only eight other sports taking place. But action is beginning in archery and modern pentathlon, and it is hotting up at the Jinniu Lake Sailing Venue ahead of the final races tomorrow.
